I think I mentioned in my last post that I was put in charge of assembling this year's United Way basket for the company raffle. The theme is "Winter Reading." Tonight, I took the cash donations to Target and shopped for things to stock the basket.
Between my employee discount and judicious use of price-cut items, I was able to get quite a haul. Oddly, throw blankets are very inexpensive as compared to oh, coffee. Mind you, from coffee I don't know beans, so I might have gotten burned on that one.
So the basket so far contains: The basket itself, a large bookbag, bookends, a bookmark, a throw blanket, two Universal Horror coffee cups, gift cards for Target and Borders, coffee, cocoa, tea (Earl Grey and Assorted Fruit), cookies, crackers, and an assortment of books ranging from "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck through a couple of romance novels to "Real", a manga about wheelchair basketball.
Depending on the competition, it should get a fair number of tickets. We have until Thursday morning to finish the basket assembly. One department already completed theirs and handed it in, a large school backpack stuffed (and I mean stuffed) with back to school supplies. It might do well, but it's a little late as all the schools will have started up already. (Okay, "Winter Reading" is a little early, but it turns cold suddenly here in Minnesota.)
