I've been making a playlist on iTunes of the songs that remind me of my JYC, HYC, 6-Day and peripheral Episcopal Youth adventures and people from "the good old days" (1991-1997). I don't really expect it to interest anyone else, but I exorcising a little nostalgia.
WINTER JYC 1992?
Awesome God - Of course we sang this at a number of conferences, but I have a very clear memory of the entire staff performing the hand motions with glowsticks.
SPRING JYC 1993 (St Mary's, Lakewood)
Alive (Pearl Jam) - RC lipsynced to this song as part of our smallgroup skit.
Puff the Magic Dragon (Peter, Paul & Mary) - One of the songs we sang at camp. There was a "happy ending" verse added on, I recall.
CAMP HUSTON 1993
We Are The Champions (Queen) - The Daughters of Artemis theme song! TC, AC, GMG and I were awesome on the archery range that summer. We could frequently be heard singing badly at the tops of our lungs.
SEPTEMBER 1993
Day By Day - My youth group went to see Taproot Theatre perform Godspell, and I invited
nubak along. I suppose you might call it a date, but I think I was too clueless at 14 to be sure. I remember him singing along to half the songs.
FALL HYC 1993 (St Paul's, Bremerton)
Two Princes (Spin Doctors) - My first HYC. I remember I was sitting outside, refusing point-blank to dance because I was very self-conscious. When this song started, I was just telling my friends there was no way they could convince me to dance to anything at all "...except to this song." And I jumped up and ran back inside and never looked back!
NEW YEARS LOCKIN 1993-1994 (St Andrews, Seattle)
Grade 9 (Barenaked Ladies) -
travellers_joy, TKF and I danced all night and were sore for a week afterward.
SPRING HYC 1994 (Good Shepherd, Vancouver)
All Apologies (Nirvana) - We were all on our way to HYC when we learned Kurt Cobain was dead. It cast a somewhat gloomy mood over the conference, even for those of us who were not Nirvana fans. I remember watching MTV that night, and seeing this song performed, and falling in love with Nirvana at that exact moment.
End of the Road (Boyz II Men) - There was a torrential downpour during the dance, and we all went out and moshed in the rain. Afterward, I danced to this song with
nubak. He was singing along very softly in my ear.
BEACH PARTY LOCKIN, APRIL 1994 (Christ Church, Puyallup)
Rape Me (Nirvana) - The infamous "Puyallup Party" which forced the Diocese to change a number of rules. And I can say I was there. In fact, I got my first kiss that night from DAL. I remember this song playing on repeat in the darkened nursery where a number of us were "sleeping".
6-DAY 1994 (Lake Retreat, Ravensdale)
Cat's in the Cradle (Harry Chapin) - The pastor read out the words as part of a sermon, and I remember me and
travellers_joy bawling our eyes out.
The Longest Time (Billy Joel) - JK sang this one for the talent show. My introduction to Billy Joel.
Lumberjack Song (Monty Python) - Ye Olde Standard for the talent show. I think we (TKF and friends) at least discussed singing this every year. The only year I'm sure we did sing it was my first 6-Day.
Blister in the Sun (Violent Femmes) - I remember my friend TZ saying this was his very favourite song when they played it at the prom. "Ummm, [TZ], do you know what it's actually about?" Well, he does now....
I'll Be There For You (The Rembrandts) - Back before it was the Friends theme song (or at least before I was aware of it being the theme song), this song was played at my first 6-Day prom, and I danced to it with
1311825. Probably the first song we danced to.
CAMP HUSTON 1994
Mr. Jones (Counting Crows) -
mittagessen and I sang this on a karaoke stage on the way home from camp. We were terrible, but we had a lot of fun.
FALL HYC 1994 (St Stephen, Longview)
Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden) - My first dance with MAA. We dated for six months.
Longview (Green Day) - We got so bouncy during the dance that I think we knocked a few tiles off the downstairs ceiling.
6-DAY 1995 (Lake Retreat, Ravensdale)
In Bloom (Nirvana) - GR claimed that this song was written about his best friend who apparently used to visit the Nirvana recording studio as a child.
Imagine (John Lennon) - BK was playing it on the piano in the girls' dorm and shouting out the chords for me to strum on my guitar. He was very insistent that I could play it. I hear he's a music teacher now.
Knights Of The Round Table (Monty Python) - TKF, JH, MHE and a few others performed this for the talent show in false beards and "plate armor" made of paper plates spray painted silver.
Honesty (Billy Joel) - BK sang and played this on the piano at the talent show for his brother JK who was graduating. He had even written his own verse.
Piano Man (Billy Joel) - BK sang and played this just for the hell of it, and a bunch of us sang along, even though I didn't know the words at the time. It remains my favourite Billy Joel song.
Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd) - GR and NB, two of my friends, were sent home from conference in disgrace (unjustly, many of us felt). D(?) played and sang this song for the talent show, dedicating it to them.
Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon & Garfunkel) - PG played this on the saxophone during the talent show for his sister, KG, who was graduating.
6-DAY 1996 (Camp Coleman)
Free Fallin' (Tom Petty) - TJ, one of our small group leaders, played this on his guitar. Then we all pounced on his wife and wrapped her up in duct tape and he carried her through the camp to a chorus of shrieks and giggles.
6-DAY 1997 (Camp Coleman)
The Ramblin' Rover (Silly Wizard) - TKF,
doncaster (my "bookends" for the week) and I sang this for the talent show. I think people were baffled, but we had a great time. Later that summer, the three of us and IG spent almost an hour singing this and other songs outside a gaming shop in downtown Seattle, before a cop (who had been listening for about half an hour) told us we had probably better move along.
Hotel California (The Eagles) -
1311825 and I were the first ones on the dancefloor at 6-Day prom, and the only ones for this song.
Glycerine (Bush) - This was
1311825's and my song. We finally got to dance to it at our last conference.
Wow. I can't believe I actually remembered the dates/conferences associated with each song! I guess there's something to be said for sense memory....
