Voulez-vous danser?

We're currently in the process of trying to pick ceremony and first dance music for us. Well, actually, we're still stuck on the first dance. The trouble is that there is only one first dance, so if you're a couple that doesn't have a "song" (like us) coming to a consensus can be tricky.

We want it to be something that we could both dance to without the need for ballroom lessons; something that had some meaning for both of us; and, preferably, on the short side, so our guests don't get too bored while we slow dance à la ninth grade it up on the floor.

I really want Joel Plaskett's "Nowhere With You," it's such a Maritime Canadian kids love song, and the first concert we went to. My future husband loves the song, but deems it too "mopey" for a first dance. (He may have a point, but quite frankly, ever since I discovered that Taylor Swift/John Mayer duet on his iPod a couple of weeks ago, I'm disinclined to take musical taste--related advice from him.)

The future husband really wants the Beatles. Anything by the Beatles. In fact, he'd be perfectly happy to have an all-Beatles wedding, maybe with the odd Tragically Hip or Decemberists song thrown in there, but other than that, all Beatles, all the time.

The trouble is that the Beatles don't really hold significance for us as a couple. Even so, I was about ready to give in and resign myself to using "Something" as our first dance (my reluctance stemmed mostly from the fact that I felt it was overused) when we remembered that one of the first movies we watched together was "Across the Universe." (See, life was all Beatles, all the time right from the get-go.) I didn't really love the movie as a whole, but I did love some of the individual songs, and one of my favourites, which was thankfully one of Rob's favourites too, was this version of "I Want to Hold Your Hand."

And look, it's short! I like it, but I guess I don't have the same emotional reaction to a movie we saw early in our dating experience as I do to the first concert we went to.

I have to say, I am torn. Part of me wants to push for Plaskett, the other part thinks there might be room for my man's Beatlephilia at the wedding, since I like this cover well enough.
