He was a really rich and fancy jerk! Which I like to think makes it a lot better. He's fodder for gold diggers. And seriously attractive. But that's besides the point.

I <3 Gabilliam so much, I'm glad I could make you enjoy it again. :D Lurk all you want!

There... is, actually. I was thinking about a sequel at some point, since it'd give me an excuse to delve more into William/Tom angst. But it's not for sure.

Hi, I was excited to read your story, but then had a bit of a problem getting through it. That was because you made both your only characters of color the 'downtown' men with menial jobs while both your only white characters got to be affluent with (presumably) high paying jobs available to them should they want them. This is problematic. It's insulting and it reinforces negative stereotyping re: jobs POC should or supposedly do have. I don't think you did it on purpose, but that doesn't change the fact that it is a problematic portrayal. In the future, I would suggest more thought and/or research before writing a fic that focuses on, in your words, differences in social status. That way you won't unintentionally write something insulting with such a troublesome message.

Hi. Since you posted anonymously I'm not sure if you'll read this, but I'm replying anyway. This fic definitely wasn't intended to be in any way insulting, but it also wasn't intended to deal seriously with differences in ethnicity. The choice of Alex being Gabe's best friend had nothing to do with his background and everything to do with the fact that personality wise he was the best fit for that character. The fic --though not a serious one by any means -- dealt with social differences, and that I stick by. It never meant to do/say anything about ethnicity, Gabe being Uruguayan played absolutely no role in my mind at any part of the process. For me it was as simple as all the Cobras being lower class socioeconomically, and all the Academy boys (including Tom as an ex member) being of a privileged class. That is why Vicky T, a clearly white female, is mentioned as one of Gabe's friends. I'm sorry you felt insulted, but who was going to be rich and who would be poor was a decision made arbitrarily based on which band they belonged to ( ... )

I'm glad you're sorry I felt insulted rather than you're sorry you insulted me. I guess the latter would just be something else entirely. Like say you taking responsibility for the fact that you wrote something offensive instead of implying this is me and my problem.

You need to step away from you meant and what your thoughts were. Instead you need to look at the picture you presented to your audience. I'll state it again: both your only characters of color were 'downtown' men with menial jobs.

If your fic was a TV show, do you think people would be wrong to be angry about their sole representation on that show being what you chose? "The white characters are successful and affluent and um, the one who represents me? He trims hedges. And oh wait, the other one who represents a marginalized group also trims hedges! Yay!"

Do you understand yet?

I'm both sorry that you felt insulted and sorry that I insulted you; since this is online it's harder to hear my tone, but I'm not being standoffish ( ... )
