I'm both sorry that you felt insulted and sorry that I insulted you; since this is online it's harder to hear my tone, but I'm not being standoffish.

I do understand where you're coming from, and I'm sorry I made you feel that way, but I can't stop readers from interpreting things their own way. Ethnicity was not meant to play any role in the fic, and if people come away after reading to think any lower of either race then they've completely missed the point. Neither Gabe nor Alex are meant to represent any sort of marginalized group. I can see why a person might find it offensive, if they read it with ethnicity and stereotypes in mind.

However, this fic is not a commentary on ethnicity, nor is ethnicity an important qualifier of the characters unless the reader applies that meaning to it. Gabe is lazy because that's who he is, and he got a menial job because Alex is a friend who wanted to help him out. Likewise, Tom isn't a smarmy bastard because he's white. The color has nothing to do with that at all. Gabe is also Jewish, and Alex is from Connecticut. None of that plays a role because it's not supposed to be important.
