Southwest Road Trip Day Seven

Dec 23, 2009 08:37

We got up way before the crack of ass to leave Texas. We had packed the car the night before. We took off at exactly 3am. Lidia, Norb and the kids were up to say good-bye to us.

Driving through Texas wasn't too bad because we drove 4 hours in the dark and missed the boring portion. We hit Sierra Blanca and went through a blizzard. It was fun until my car overheated. We barely made it to El Paso. We ate at IHOP while I let my car cool down. I was worried. I checked everything and nothing was wrong. I figured out that I accidently was running the AC to defog my windows going up the Sierra Blanca pass. Que Mensa!!

El Paso is right next to Mexico. The 10 freeway is less than one mile from the border. It was weird being so close to Mexico. It made me sad I wasn't enjoying the lovely weather in the Sea of Cortez. We were estatic to get out of Texas; 10 hours after we left my sister's house. Our next destination was Surprise Arizona so I could see my BFF sea kayaking buddy. Jorge goes to Med school at the Mayo Clinic in MN and was visiting his sister. It so happened we were passing through the area at the same time.

Once again, New Mexico was a huge disappointment. Of course, we didn't see the nice parks but we were happy to leave. We made it to AZ at sunset and had a 2 hour drive to Surprise. We made it there at 9pm. Jorge and I flapped our jaws until 1am. His sister insisted we take a nap before we left at 4am. I was really happy I took up her offer. I was dog tired. It was great to see Jorge again. He still has 2 more years for his PhD and then 2 more years for his MD. Poor guy but it is 100% paid for...
