Sorry it took so long. I couldn't get it from where I wrote it at.
Hey everyone, just wanting to type up my review on War of the Worlds @
12:29 am this morning after seeing the film. Ok, I'm gonna give my good
points 1st about the film. Here goes...
The feeling of the film was great and very unforgiving. Deaths were
much abound in this film, and to be able to maintain a PG-13 rating,
very well done. The aliens were great as well, the Tripods were
tremendously huge and very organic even though it was a machine. Many,
many props go out to Dennis Muren and his digital effects team, he is a
great Digital Effects artist and it shows in every one of the films he
has had a hand in doing (Jurassic Park, Star Wars OT, etc...) Dakota
Fannings' skills as a young actress were what made this film in my view,
I shall keep watching her as she grows as an actress. And Spielbergs'
vision as a director is seen here, he is a great man and the script
maintain the points I wanted the most out of the film. The pace and
heart of the entire film is good, but there was a few flaws in my
view....
My biggest problem I have with this film is the characters. I didnt
enjoy any of them except Dakotas, (she took over the entire film
whenever she opened her mouth) Tom Cruise, poor Tom, I have enjoy many
of his films, I love his skills, yes, sometimes he is a bit overbearing,
but he usually keeps it in check. I did not have any love for him or his
character in this film, even when it was all over. I am still trying to
figure out what it was the most that offset me (maybe it was that his
son was 15 and he just did not feel like he could have been his father)
But I also had an issue with the son, by which, if I were able to, I
would have put his name in here. I could not connect with him as well. I
was trying to figure out if he was a rebel, a punk, bad kid or just
misunderstood. I never got it. Tim Robbins character should have been
played by an unknown, not an academy award winner (maybe spielberg felt
bad for him in not having any good roles here lately) Another problem,
when Cruise got the van and started driving, his path was too
predetermined in my opinion, during both times he got into the vehicle.
That is what made this film in my opinion, a good film, but not great.
The Hollywood ending as well urked me, I know cleanliness is next to
godliness, but maybe the fam was just too damned worried about wearing
fresh clothes and taking a shower then about the 2 children that were
running for their damned lives.
I do not in any way hate this film, I think people should still go see
this. But I came out with no love for the characters. Even Mirando Ottos
character was not so great. Trust me, I want to love this film, I love
War of the Worlds, H. G. Wells style, this has some H. G. style with it,
but was taken away with the insertion of Cruise.
Sorry Josh, I so wanted to love this film.
