Your Favourite Character - Lee Adama (Battlestar Galactica)
I don't know that he's my favourite science fiction character of all time, but he's my favourite character on BSG, and that's in my head right now. Ask again in a month, and it might be someone else.
2. BFF-ness - Samantha Carter & Cameron Mitchell (Stargate SG-1)
3. A Ship - John Sheppard/Cameron Mitchell (Stargate Atlantis/Stargate SG-1)
I've got to be honest here. There's absolutely no canon support for John Sheppard and Cameron Mitchell ever forming any sort of romantic bond. I think the two of them only share about a minute together on screen, during which time Cam compliments John on Atlantis, and John offers advice on how to deal with Rodney. That’s not much of a basis for a relationship. So why 'ship them?
Well, of course, they're hot together. And there's the delightfully unexpected vulnerability that can arise when you stick two alpha males in a relationship together. But mostly I think it's because their similarities and differences line up so well. On the one hand, they're approximately the same age, they've followed similar career paths (i.e., Air Force pilots), and they're both heavily involved in a top secret program that they can’t talk about with anyone else. On the other hand, Cam's emotionally generous and perceptive, and John...is not. (This, I will note, is not the same thing as lacking social skills. John has social skills. He's just a little short on intimate relationship skills.) And that difference opens up all sorts of possibilities for dramatic tension as the two try to find a balance between their different methods of communicating while also living in different galaxies.
Oh yeah, and they live in difference galaxies, and can’t openly talk about their relationship because of DADT. Which is great for angst-junkies like me. So there's that too.
4. Someone You Used To Hate, But Now Love - G'Kar (Babylon 5)
Oh, G'Kar! He was started out as arrogant and angry at the beginning of the show, and by the end he was one of the wisest, most judicious characters the show had. I think he got on of the best plot arcs of anyone on B5, and that's saying something. (And I love the nod the show gave to that development, when he picks his replacement and tells the new Narn to take a look at the records and see the man G'Kar once was.)
5. Your Choice - Amy Pond and the Doctor (Doctor Who)
6. A Minor Character - Vir Cotto (Babylon 5)
I'd like to live just long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on a pike as a warning to the next ten generations that some favors come with too high a price. I would look up into your lifeless eyes and wave, like this:
7. Social Networking Galactica-Style (Battlestar Galactica)
8. Colours
The world was awash in colour. Vibrant reds and soothing blues streaked the sky, sun-bright yellow blinded her when she looked down, and sneaky greens crept up...wait.
"You're green, sir," Zoë told Mal matter-of-factly.
"I am not green," Mal said with dignity. He took a stumbling step forward, tripped, and decided it was too much effort to stand again. "You're starting to sound like River," he said from the ground.
"You're green," Zoë insisted. "And you should know better than to try to sneak up on me. Sir." She giggled on the last word. The sound was purple to her. Sounds had never had colours before. She rather liked it.
"You're giggling," Mal said. "You don't giggle."
"No, sir," Zoë agreed. She pressed her lips tightly together, to prevent any more sounds from escaping. Soldiers shouldn't giggle. It was too bad, though. It had been a pretty shade of purple. "You're still green," she offered when she thought she was safe from giggling again.
Mal held up a hand and stared at it wonderingly. "I'm not green," he said. "I'm blue." He looked up at her. "Was I blue before? I don't think I was blue before."
Zoë considered. "No, sir, I think you were more pinkish before."
"This ain't right. Something ain't right here. I'm not supposed to be blue. And you are not supposed to be eight feet tall and glowing silver."
"I'm not eight feet tall," Zoë said. She looked at her hand surreptitiously. No silver. It was a little disappointing. She thought she'd like to glow silver.
"You are from down here," Mal said. "Eight feet tall and silver like a statue."
"I don't think you want a statue for your first mate, sir."
"I don't know, might be useful. Could sell you when times got tight."
Zoë glowered at him. She thought it must be impressive, if she really looked eight feet tall.
Mal struggled to his feet. Zoë didn't offer him a hand.
"I think it's time we made our way back to the ship," Mal said. "This place is doing somethin' to us."
"Yes, sir," Zoë agreed, but she didn't move. She'd just noticed the clouds, green and gold spreading like banners across a sky that was suddenly white as new snow.
Mal looked up too. "We'll go in just a minute."
9. Something Old - The Stargate (Stargate Atlantis)
Nothing says old like something built by the Ancients!
