Portrait Class Report
Week 2: Well, we are continuing the back-to-basics and I continue to discover that I REALLY need it.
This week we did some classic excersizes, and JOY! no Mr. Plasterhead, but a real live model!! I should get some photos of Mary, I hope she poses for us again; she is a swimmer, and really nice, but also just a really good model, calm and present and still. Over the weekend I tried to get a friend to pose, and they just couldnt stay put!
So first, ye olde "blind contour" draw as if you are touching the model, dont lift your crayon, and DONT LOOK AT THE PAPER.
There are a few of them on this page:
Here is another, that she asked us to do with our NON_DOMINANT hand!
I was amazed at how absorbing this was to do, and how good it looked. If I had been LOOKING at the drawing, I know it would have come out way worse!
we did some "all straight line" drawings, to help us follow the changes in edge of several different poses, then this one, which I cant recall ever doing before: Draw the axis of the neck with the side of the crayon, as if you were a sculptor. add "clay" (tone) with your crayon as if you were building from the inside out, searching for the edge of the form.
it worked -- it felt like a real presence, after only 12 minutes.
I am happy to be learning!
