one bizarre hymn

i am: present and accounted for
listening to: the superbowl on the tv in the other room; but i'm not really listening
drinking: dregs of dinnertime iced tea

many years ago i listened to a pearl jam CD - i think it was their first - and i was intrigued. there was one thing that put me off though, and it was a big thing: though i was drawn to many aspects of the music, in particular eddie vedder's rich and distinctive vocals, i couldn't understand what was being sung. when i listen to music with vocals, i like to understand the lyrics; and i like them to say something worthwhile, or if not worthwhile, at least express some sentiment or emotion that i can empathize with or relate to. i don't mind working a bit to deciphering all the words - i don't even mind having to resort to reading the liner notes - but in the end, if i can't make out the lyrics then they've lost me, and i'll be happy to find an instrumental because many of those speak to me louder than those with words.

that said, i still think eddie vedder has a fine voice, and i have always liked the song "yellow ledbetter" (despite my inability to understand the lyrics.) and that said, i was vastly amused by this video i came across the other day when taking a break from my project:

according to lyricwiki.org here are the actual lyrics:

Unsealed yeah, on a porch a letter sat.
Then you said, "I wanna leave it again."
Once I saw her on a beach of weathered sand.
And on the sand...
I wanna leave it again... yeah.
On a weekend... wanna wish it all away, yeah...
And they called, and I said that "I want what I said" and then I call out again.
And the reason, oughta' leave her calm, I know...
I said, "I know what I wear, not the boxer or the bag."
Ah yeah, yeah,
Can you see them...
Out on the porch?...
Yeah, but they don't wave...
I see them... round the front way, yeah.
And I know, and I know...
I don't want to stay...

(make me cry)

Ooooh I see...
Ooh, I dont know there's something else...
I want to drum it all away...
Oh, I said, "I--I don't, I don't know whether I was the boxer or the bag."

Ah yeah...
Can you see them...
Out on the porch?
Yeah, but they don't wave.
But, I see them round the front way, yeah.
And I know, and I know...{, that I don't...} I don't want to stay, alone {at all}
I don't wanna stay. Yeah.
I don't wanna stay.
I don't.
Don't wanna...
Ohhhh...
Yeah... oooh no no no no no
Ohhhhhhh oh oh oh oh

i'm not sure which version i like better, but i do know that i won't ever be able to hear this song again without a smile on my face.

i've found so many oddly amusing vids in the past week or so, but i won't spam you guys with them here now. i'll add them backdated in their own post ... probably around the same time i manage to get caught up with the "forgotten words." someday.

today's reading: fitz and the fool have entered the realm of the pale lady on asjeval. in other words, i'm winding up my slow-motion re-read of robin hobb's fool's fate.
