it's ten years old nobody should use it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's comments like that which make me angry. There are reasons people use XP, and it's not just because some people are lazy and afraid of change. Granted, this is true about some, but it's ignorant to think that everyone using XP just doesn't want to put any effort into getting something "better" or is too cheap to. (Granted, though, 7 does cost a fair bit! Ouch. Not as bad as Office, though...)
If you're not aware, I've been switching over a fair bit to other OSes - namely, CrunchBang (a Linux distribution, fairly lightweight, using Openbox and tint2) and Mac OS X. Windows XP still gets the most use by a longshot, and whenever I so much as mention a computer or read an article I either see people jumping on those who use it or get jumped on myself. (One of these people who jumps on me even would do the same if I ran Linux and had the occasional issue - you just can't win!)
I have tried Windows 7, and I did not like it. This is for a multitude of reasons:
- It absolutely EXPLODED when I ran it on my desktop (the only XP machine now), taking out 48GB of files when it tried to recover itself. I'm glad I just hit reset when I did, lest I possibly end up losing EVERYTHING on my external.
- It's got various weird issues with it that I never experienced on Vista or XP. Wireless, regardless of the machine, dies randomly... and with the way my connection is, it fucks up my logging. (Glad I have a Linux box in my corner as a backup!) Also, on my Satellite (which I still need to get repaired - it took a fall, the DC IN broke), pressing enter would randomly bring up the power options (as in, every time, but this occurred at random). How the hell do you get that kind of bug?
- It's less stable from my experiences. On XP, I've had merely reproducible bluescreens, and these were caused by shitty Conexant drivers. 7 has bluescreened on me much more often (BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER, usually), and one time was even before the great shitting itself. Granted, bluescreens aren't everything... but programs have also given me more trouble on 7 than on XP or Vista.
Note, I said nothing about speed or RAM usage. 7 is a comparable performer next to XP, and while it MAY use more RAM, I believe it manages it differently than XP. (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here, however.)
From a usability standpoint to the general user, 7 is actually miles above XP - there's no denying that. Hell, I still miss the new taskbar. I'm not going to deal with an OS that gives me problems for one feature, though.
Aside from those problems, Windows 7 is actually a great OS. There are just some major killing points to it, such as general weird bugginess... and who would use an OS that ate tons of their files? It's just those reasons that keep me on XP - I'd try Vista, but I don't own a copy of it, nor do I really want to download it. (and people give you shit if you do this too! that's another story entirely, though, that I won't touch...)
And, of course, some people just don't see the need to upgrade if what they have is doing what they want. I talk to a few people with this mindset.
Now, okay, there may be some compelling reasons to upgrade, and suggesting such is absolutely fine - ESPECIALLY if the newer version will provide a solution to some issues in the older one! There's nothing wrong at all with that. It's when people start becoming preachy that it irritates me.
I guess the end point is: Use what the fuck you want to, don't give anyone else shit for what they have, and if they're using something old, don't knock them - they may have a perfectly valid reason.
On a more positive note: I've been considering toying with Linux on this desktop. I already did a bit, but honestly, can Ubuntu really count by this point? If it works for you, use it, but... it's just deviated so far that you either love it or loathe it by this point. I fall into the latter, but to the basic end-user it would be a godsend if they wanted to play with Linux. That's the great thing about Linux, though: you can mold it just how you like it, especially with the advent of distributions like Arch and Gentoo.
Leaving it open to comments. Just don't knock anybody else.
I bet I horribly mangled some of my thoughts and left some of them out completely. I'm just angry about people giving me crap when I use what I have the best luck with.
