Dropped words and muddled clauses all over the place

Whoops, vanished for months on end again. I have, however, been recently inspired by an interesting Ask.MetaFilter question on what makes a journal interesting to future historians and am going to try to write more regularly, if not necessarily profoundly.

How have you all been? (All five of you who read this -- no guillt-tripping, I find myself spending less and less time on LJ/DW these days myself.)

What I've been up to: just went on a long weekend trip to Prague with my dad, mostly to visit relatives (or the honorary-relatives, who we're closer to at this point) and get some relaxation time in at my late grandparents' summer cottage, which we've kept in the family. When I say relaxing, I mean that the most exciting thing all day was that Uncle F rescued a hedgehog from the compost pit. (Cute little thing.)

Also met a friend from Tumblr and went to see Pacific Rim with her, in marginally overwhelming IMAX 3D. Enjoyed it a lot and wouldn't mind seeing it again soon, esp. to take in the the visual symbolism a little better. Still would've liked another ten-fifteen minutes to flesh out the characters a bit more. Appreciated that two of the film's three main leads were (extremely awesome) people of color, though I still had to side-eye the lack of Asian supporting cast for a film mostly set around Hong Kong, not to mention the character of "Tendo Choi" played by an actor of Mexican-German descent, of all things. Also much love for Gottlieb and Gieszler being intrepid science-types with disabilities who get to throw themselves into danger and help save the world in an integral way.

Apparently there might be a sequel if the movie does well enough in the international market -- much to my surprise it hasn't actually opened in Japan yet! Be interested to see how Mako Mori (♥) is received there. Can't say I'm that interested in a sequel, because the ending was so beautiful and emotionally definitive -- at the very least, if there is a sequel I'd be very happy if Del Toro didn't name the main giant robot after a racial slur. Gipsy Danger, seriously?

Non-spoilery: the main theme is pretty rad. Earworm warning!

After several months of on and off reading -- not due to lack of interest, but because about the only time I read hardcopy books these days is when they're graphic novels or I'm on the airplane, apparently -- I finally finished Perdido Street Station today. I actually had to reread significant chunks of the book several times to refresh my memory of the plot, and it says something about the power of the prose that each time I tried to skim and ended up just reading again. Going to try The Scar next.

F@#$ Yeah, Spider-Wife just passed its 3rd anniversary, which I'm still wrapping my head around. It's been an interesting challenge to myself to keep a special-subject blog running on a semi-regular schedule for so long, but I think I'm about ready to wind things down and focus on other projects, especially stuff that's not so, well, special-subject. I'm feeling pressure on myself to take some of the ideas I've developed through three years of hyper-specific micro-litcrit and apply them to broader topics. Have set the end of the year as a tentative closing date to give myself time to write all that meta I keep putting off writing. Meanwhile, have participated in several Women Write About Comics roundtables (the Captain Marvel and Women in Marvel ones) and am slated to become a regular contributor on some level or another.

Currently knitting: my second pair of fingering-weight socks. First pair were my Socks for Stannis. Slightly worried about blooming ruining the fit, since I didn't do a gauge swatch -- I know, I know, but I impulse-bought a single skein of 50g yarn, so there isn't much leeway.
