While taking the bread order into Westside Deli, I noticed that on their specials board, someone had spelled their soup du jour as "potatoe leek." I took the bread inside, and while I was putting it on the shelf, I told one of the servers that they had a misspelling on the board. They finally determined it was the lone female server.
Her response? "Well, I just don't understand. Why do they spell tomato with an 'e' but not potato?"
The other servers then explained to her that tomato is spelled sans 'e', as well. While signing the invoice, she explained that the only class she ever got a D in was spelling while attending parochial school. I laughed most of the way home. And when I got here,
the_lucky_nun had come home early, which is good. The stress that sent her home is not.
