After spending roughly half an hour on the phone and another half hour poking around online, I discovered that getting my camera fixed is going to be a lot fucking cheaper than I had originally anticipated.
The estimate provided by Kodak's website is $105. There was no way in hell that I was going to pay that much, plus shipping, to just get the battery door replaced. I tried calling around town to see if anyone does camera repairs, digital or otherwise. Nope. Nearest place is Topeka or Overland Park... and I go to neither location regularly.
So, I figured I'd just suck it up and send in the camera. My original plan was to ship it to Kodak and upgrade it to the next best model. Well, they no longer have two models to choose from. I guess a lot of people decided to upgrade for the holidays, as I can't upgrade to a DX6490 for $145 + shipping. I'd have to upgrade to the next camera above that (a Z760)for $195 + shipping. Being as how I can get a brand new Z760 for $230 on eBay, plus a dock, BRAND NEW... fuck that.
After reaching that decision, I figured I'd just call the place Kodak uses for repairs, and find out what the ACTUAL charge would be. After a lengthy explanation, in which the gentleman on the phone informed me that the $105 estimate is for a total overhaul of the camera, I eventually found out that if the camera does in fact just need a battery door, and that the drop the the concrete didn't jar anything loose, they'd fix the door, clean the whole thing inside and out, and give me a 90-day warranty for 35 bones, plus shipping.
Needless to say, this fucker's hitting the mail tomorrow. I may keep it, or I may sell it on eBay and see what I can find in the local pawn shops. Just depends what's up.
