This weekend was the beginning of the great pumpkin harvest. We have tried in previous years to grow them but much to Ryan's disappointment, have failed (largely because of going on holiday and there being no-one to water them). This year we succeeded - hurrah! This has been a source of great excitement as they are destined not for the dinner table, oh no, these are coveted for their potential as jack-o-lanterns (this will surprise no-one who knows our household).
This, of course, called for the taking of photographs for posterity (and which are now littered all over flickr). During the process however the camera decided to see if it could "give me the fear" by giving me an error message which it said could only be resolved by powering down.... after every photo. Added to which the lens refused to auto-focus and would happily whirr away back and forth through the focal range for as long as you kept the shutter release half depressed. This was not happy making as you can imagine, but by switching to manual focus, and keeping switching off and on I managed to get the shots I wanted.
Having faffed around with it a bit later, I no longer get the error message (BIG relief as it means the camera body is ok) and my other lenses seem to be working ok. The lens still won't focus though and I was wondering if anyone else had ever had a similar problem. It is the EFS 17-85mm lens that is the trouble. I realise it doesn't have the best optics ever but i do find it useful to have around.
