Once I get it out of my system, I'm going to get work done. Yes.

1. I can't stop eating these Mars filled Pods things. I buy them thinking I'll ration them as treats, but then I just munch on them constantly. I have no self control. Damn seductive caramel.

2. I have to get seriously working on my Games and Simulation assessment. I am making a text adventure game. It is set in Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. ( Read more... )

So, I totally resisted clicking on that (masterfully well done, I must say - nice work you) link while working on my Games assessment. I am so rocking this uni thing. Ha, take that tercery terceiy terciery terchiry I forgot that I can't spell that word - IT THWARTS ME EVERY TIME formal education. I do hope your uni stuff has calmed down too. It fells so good when things are done. Although, I am still seeing things in software coding...

So, some recs for you! My two favourite authors and a RP.

(I do tend to go on a bit with praise, I'm afraid. And can't talk about texts of any sort without getting a bit analytical. But the recs are good, under all the unnecessary academic fangirl babble.)

snitched is the Marauder roleplay I mentioned and possibly the funniest thing ever. Insane drunkenness and profanity and chocolate and groping and lots of capslock. IT IS BRILLIANT. I find it's fun to start at the beginning & read the players journals as you read to main comm. It is insane and hard to keep track of but it is FANTASTIC and HILARIOUS. hello the recent entries involve time travel i may just have a little look and sjkdgbdsvn oh crap now i am addicted again.

Kabeyk's fics (link to her list) are some of the best marauder stuff I've come across. The way her characters think is like crack to my psychologist brain. And her stuff is insane but poignant and always excellently done. She is quite mad, and there is a great intelligence underlying everything; the boys are such real boys, the way they act, the way they think, they way they interact - the language is never romanticised or fluffy, but embraces the mundane and grotty - she's just amazing.
"The Dating Disasters of Sirius Black" is one of the staples of R/S longfic, and she's got some great R/S oneshots. And "From Another Perspective" is one of my favourite H/Ds.

She's also THE QUEEN OF R/J. Completely converted me. Her R/J feels so right. After reading them I have been known to just sit and whimper, while saying desperately "you know, James, sweetheart, adultery isn't really that bad. I'm sure Lily would understand. James? Sweetie? *whimper*".

I just re-read "With Hindsight" and died. Breaks my heart every time. It is so beautiful and so apt, and there is such longing there.

Actually, "My Beautiful Friend" and
"Our Mutual Friend" are what really converted me - was looking for more R/S by her and found those. From James' POV with much Remus adoration. It was also after reading those that I realised I was actually just a hopeless Remus fangirl. I'm not much of a fan of normal pr0n, I live for beautifully realistic psychology. But, really, a good Remus or Remus observing is all that's really required to send me into worlds of squee.

Speaking of good Remuses, "Shadow of His Wings" by Mirabella has the best Remus ever. It is a H/D, and is one of the most amazingly well done pieces of 'fic I've ever read. The H/D is not what makes this fic good (though it is excellent). She also focuses on other characters (her Fred and George are divine), and the plot is enthralling and beautifully structured and well thought out. Her interpretation of the world is intriguing and quite plausible - the way she has Remus discuss Peter is particularly affecting, and her Harry is perfectly developed. It's an amazingly mature fic; a very advanced piece of writing (which is not at all to say that it is stuffy or pompous) that is incredibly satisfying.

Her other works are oneshots, and generally much lighter in tone (except "Trinity", which I respect immensely). Some ("A Consummation Devoutly to be Wished", for example) are incredibly funny, and her Harry is always excellent.

...One day I'm just gonna write an essay on this stuff.

IT'S NOT MY FAULT IF PEOPLE WRITE THINGS THAT ARE BEGGING TO BE ANAYLISED. FANFICS ARE TEXTS TOO (MANY OF WHICH ARE MORE COMPLEX THAN CANON). I HAVE BEEN CORRUPTED BY ENGLISH TEACHERS AND PSYCHOLOGY STUDY.

Yes, one day I shall write and essay. And it will include my thoughts on how particular fics and fics as a whole relate to the original canon. IT WILL BE NERDY AND ACEDEMIC AND AWESOME and will probably never happen.

Why can't I stop typing? STOP.

I shall have to check that out. Fandom (as well as being fun as all hell) is so interesting. I have read some academic stuff that somehow misses the point entirely though, like this woman. Who very obviously has only been exposed to ff.net. (Summed up here.) Though I don't know if you'd call that "acedemic, given that she refuses to reveal her sources and doesn't allow comments that oppose her POV...

Fandom is great to examine sociologically and in terms of gender, but I'd love to see it looked at in the field of english. It is a new form of text that is a joy to anaylise and study comparitively.

...That is one hell of a rec list. Dude.

Ah! Copperbadge wrote Stealing Harry! No wonder the name is familiar. Have read that one (the main fic), it was darling. Okay so Cartographer's Craft sounds great. I am very intrigued. Will read. (and not to worry, am inclined to think HP/SB could be quite cool if done well, so that should be interesting) and i may have to have a bit of a peek at his torchwood stuff while i'm there. yup.

Drop Dead Gorgeous is crazy fun, man! Haven't finished it, though, and didn't know about QoM. As much as I dislike Maya's Harry and the way she developed the relationship in UL, I can't help but love reading her stuff. She is just. so. funny. And her Draco is adorable! With coffee! Squee!

Have you read her utterly lovely post-DH fic? It's vaguely Al/Scorpius, and has some nice Harry Draco interaction, but is largely just very enjoyable gen. With alligators and James's adoring womenfolk (tm).

I've rather gone off R/S lately (though will still read something if it looks good), but it was my first Potter pairing, and is the subject of some of my favourite fics - the R/S folder in my favourites is enormous (H/D is slowly catching up).

But anyway, I kinda gotta rec All Kidding Aside (chaptered, Hogwarts era, summary: "When Lily jumps to conclusions about Remus and Sirius, the duo decide to get revenge on her, James, and Peter with a wonderful joke") and the collected oneshots of nyxty. Nyxty wrote the sock puppet fic I mentioned on the bus. Her fics are either completely insane (omfg, "it's called the chamber of secrets" is mental) or quite moving. I loves her.
