I took Nana to the vet yesterday for her monthly trip. I don't know her exact date of birth, but I'm guessing mid-march, so she's around the 7 months old range. Yesterday she weighed in at 9.22 kg, or 20.3 pounds. She's still got a little bit of growing to do, but not that much. I think she'll end up being a mid-size dog, maybe a little on large size of medium. Still, I'm always surprised by the spaces she can get into considering her size. She loves chasing a laser pointer I picked up and will crawl under the couch to chase it. She has to crawl on her stomach to do it, but she will. I also had to add a board to the bottom of the gate leading to the road because she was able to slip under it, and the opening barely came above her "knee".
She gets a monthly trip to the vet because she has an over-large heart. It's about twice the size it should be, so big that it's pushing up against other organs and therefore slightly mis-shapen. When she was smaller, I saw an x-ray. I was holding out a small hope that she might grow into it. Perhaps she has, a little, but I don't think so. She still starts to pant pretty quickly, and I can't take her jogging anymore (I had before I learned about her bad heart), but she does have a lot of energy. Almost too much sometimes. And she seems to be able to handle climbing Mt. Tarumae- the elevation isn't that severe. And she has a big heart in a figurative sense, as well. She loves going up to complete strangers for attention as long as I'm nearby. If I'm not, she's a little suspicious. But you should see her buttering up other people when we're out at the park. When she's tired, she loves to curl up next to me, or if I'm prone on the couch playing Xbox games, she'll often drape herself over me. She's getting a bit big for it, but I still pick her up all the time. The way she just leans in and gives me a puppy hug when I do is so disgustingly cute and adorable it makes up for things like pulling my Road Runner refrigerator magnet down and chewing it into small pieces. Eat your heart out, Wile E., my seven month old puppy succeeded where you and the entire product supply line of the Acme corporation failed. Of course, she's currently having problems with getting the dog biscuit out of the kong ball, but that's another story.
Speaking of cartoons, the Warner Bros. characters aren't very well known here in Japan with the exception of Tweety. Tom and Jerry are very popular, however. It probably has something to do with the Tom and Jerry cartoons being mostly without dialogue. No dialogue means no (or minimal) translation. I have a Road Runner videotape I've shown a few people and they've really liked it. Bugs, Daffy, et al, I'm working on it.
