I think that black bag is actually a MedAcademy set of tools -- it's got stats/info in my RPG sourcebook. Supposedly they're lots shinier than normal infirmary stuff.
Doctor's Bag (MedAcad): (cost: 210 credits/525 platinum) A doctor who graduates from one of the major Medical Academies (on Osiris, Londinum, or Sihnon) will almost certainly have one of these. Technically, they are available to any licensed practitioner in the Core (as are most medical supplies, if the buyer can pay), but that means that the person must have attended one of the major MedAcads or has his training certified by one, which is no mean feat. These more advanced doctor's kits include the best in portable instrumentation, the latest in commonly needed medicines (though in small amounts), and so forth. The penalty for any surgery with this is reduced to between -1 and -3 skill steps from a normal doctor's bag, though some things (such as major open-heart surgery) still require more than is available here.
I can't be the only one amused by:- 1. How Simon's bag costs about as much as they were getting from Patience for food; and 2. How it needs to specify that no, you can't perform major open heart surgery out of a doctor's bag.
I'm really going to have to get the RPG book, yes.
