Serenity, Parts 1 & 2 aka "notthemovie"
The introduction episode. We meet the cast and find out how Simon, River and Book joined the crew. We're also introduced to Reavers and the fact that Serenity's crew are partners in suckitude. In the pecking order, they are pretty far down.
We also learn a little about the Alliance, mainly that it has far reaching powers but that Serenity at this point of time simply isn't worth their time chasing after.
- In the first meeting between Mal and Simon, Kaylee introduces Simon to Mal by his first name. Simon refers to Mal as "Captain Reynolds". This suggests that Kaylee and Simon were speaking beforehand, but it was probably just arranging for passage.
- Simon's apparently a fidgeter. He does his best to hide it, putting his hands behind his back so that the other crew members can't see it, or holding his hands together in front of him, but he fidgets when he's nervous.
- He has a habit of speaking in fragments, with the second fragment designed to clarify the first one. "What does he do? On the ship." etc.
- When talking about things that are emotionally important to him, Simon'll cut himself off. He's surprisingly good at self-censorship.
- Simon's consistently referred to as "the boy", "son" etc. It's a common Western stereotype, but it also suggests that Simon is fairly young and inexperienced.
- He's carrying a set of tools in his black bag, and seems skilled enough at them to perform maintenance on a cryobox.
Relationships
Kaylee
- He seems aware that she's flirting with him in the galley, but doesn't really seem interested in reciprocating. He glances away from her, his expression's neutral and his questions seem to be rote, rather than a genuine interest in her.
- After blackmailing Mal for passage on the ship over Kaylee, he doesn't speak to her afterwards. We never do find out what he thought of doing that, but it's unlikely that he enjoyed the experience.
Jayne
- He really, really does not like him. He's quiet at this time about his dislike, saving it for filthy looks after Jayne's passed but there is not a lot of like here.
Wash
- There's only really one exchange between Simon and Wash, and it's really because they're the only two people on the ship who are able to talk. Simon's a little distant with him, but he's a little distant with almost everyone. F-fail.
River
- Very tactile with her and he seems comfortable with her being tactile with him as well.
- He's very gentle with her, very sweet and he tries to be happy for her sake, or at least appear to be so.
- JUMPS OFF A FREAKING CATWALK WTF.
- He adores her, refers to her as a gift etc.
Inara
- gets advice from her that actually kinda makes sense and is reassuring.
- kinda siblingesque, with Simon being the younger brother. Weird.
Mal
- He doesn't like him, yet finds him more reasonable than Jayne. That said, Simon certainly doesn't trust him. "How do I know you won't kill me in my sleep" indeed.
