I am posting this entry now (instead of tomorrow like I planned originally) solely to post this link:
http://wellknowwhenwegetthere.blogspot.com/2009/08/sincerely-john-hughes.htmlI saw it on my flist earlier today and clicked it and I just fucking cried my eyes out. This is beautiful and whether you care about john hughes or his films at all or even know who he is. I still think you should read this. Everyone should. What a lovely kind hearted man he was. and It really showed in his movies which were beneath the 80's style dramatics were really earnest and sweet. RIP John Hughes, your creativity and heart will forever be missed.

I finally saw North & South today. It was a beautiful drama and I thank everyone who recommended it to me because I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Margaret was wonderful I liked that she was compassionate and thought about others without being totally impractical and naive. I love that Margaret was passionate and always voiced her concerns and wasnt afraid to confront or challenge Thornton but never came off as preachy, sanctimonious or arrogant. I love that the Thornton's mother while very hard headed and high on herself was NOT a villainous hag or evil out to destroy Margaret and keep her away from her son at any cost and instead was portrayed as sympathetic and a strong mother with a loving heart. I love how no one in this drama was vilified and everyone's point of view was presented as valid and sympathetic and reasonable.
There are also so many beautiful powerful shots and scenes, a particular favorite of mine is seeing John Thorton's dark imposing figure contrasted along the eerie whiteness of the cotton at his mill. I think my possibly two most favorite scenes where when Margie told John to go be a man and face the protesters (So he does!) yet still tries to protect him from their fury and ends up putting herself in harm's way. I also really loved the scene between Thorton and Margie where he attempted to propose to her. When he became very emotional and shouted "I dont want to posses you! I want to marry you because I LOVE YOU!" I may or may not have melted a bit at that. Possibly. It was nice to see how he was really a guy with alot of heart despite the cool and hard exterior and I actually felt bad for him at the way he was turned down, even though I dont blame Margaret at all. and I cant state enough how refreshing and wonderful it is that everyone in this drama was fascinating, sympathetic and complex. Except Fanny who was just really spoiled and annoying, but still not evil. and she's not wrong, milton IS really dirty and smoggy and miserable looking. I could never imagine living in an industrial town. I cant imagine the culture shock Margie must have had moving from pretty southern countryside into a hard scrabble northern industrial town. Seeing her adjust to life there is really one of the very compelling aspects of this drama for me. Nothing I love more than a good fish out of water story. The awesome northern accents though are a noted plus!
The thing I love MOST about North & South is as much as it is a love story and it is a very beautiful love story it's also becomes that much more, because of it's very rich setting, supporting cast and conflicts that are not entirely centered around the couple or romance and feel very real for the time period.
I also started watching Skins sometime yesterday and I'm on episode four right now in the first season and this is already shaping up to me one of my most favorite shows ever and possibly the best teen centric show I've ever seen. It helps that Skins has a realness to it that other teen shows lack even while being really surreal or crazy sometimes. I cant wait to watch more and at this rate I think I may even watch S3 despite it having an all new cast.
I'll wrap up this hasty entry by saying I changed my layout the other day. and also my profile. So check those out, if you like.
