On my way to work this afternoon, I was excited at the prospect of working a mid-shift and getting off at 7pm… it would be light outside when I ventured beyond the pet world cave, tired and probably stained with all manner of dog and cat fluids (and solids), new bruises and maybe bleeding my own blood. I would have time to surprise Jeff at work and get some free coffee or spruce up the apartment with a handkerchief in my hair and some 409 on a sponge. I’d have time to finish the last 100 pgs of The Witching Hour. But upon my arrival at the Greenville PetsHotel, it soon became apparent that it was the Sunday of Father’s Day Weekend and I was in fact closing. The evening was a nightmare even though some associates stayed late and everyone worked hard. When the third shift staff arrived I handed them a PetsHotel largely in disarray- playtimes, Pawgress reports, and evening walks unfinished. I walked to my car at 7:08, leaving before only the manager who had to lock up for the night. Once I got to my apartment in Spartanburg, I put on the title menu of Jeff’s copy of Silent Hill that was sitting on the coffee table (as if I had the nerve to watch a scary movie in an apartment by myself at sunset). I made a portabella mushroom sandwich from French bread, provolone cheese, and mushrooms I’ve been marinating in steak seasonings and soy sauce for two days. Instead of putting on Lost Boys as I had planned, I put on the Other Boleyn Girl which was the perfect movie for the evening. Lust, Betrayal, Courtship, Babies, Power struggles, Coy women, and Blood. When my movie was over I took a hot shower and scrubbed then moisturized every inch of my skin. I pulled on some brown sweat pants and a blue yoga tank top and surfed allposters.com for blue footed booby courtship pictures and Andrew Wyeth’s “Master Bedroom” which is one of my favorites.
Jeff got home a little while ago. After perusing the apartment, going to the bathroom, retrieving his flash drive from his car, eating some taco bell he bought on the way home, and playing his new electric guitar I got a couple kisses. Now he’s sitting at his computer across the living room from me working on a computer science assignment that’s due tomorrow. I will have to clock in to work in less than nine hours. Tomorrow I actually DO get to work a mid-shift. I did call my dad to wish him a happy Father’s Day. I think it’s the first one I’ve spent away from him. He, my mother, and brother all went out to dinner as usual. When I called they were walking out to the car.
I’ve been listening to Silverstein and sipping lemon-lime Gatorade out of a pink ice cream float cup for the last hour or so. Jeff is doing crunches on the floor. I spoke with Laurel last night. Sweet girl whom I miss. I hope to speak to Senga soon and I’m pained to have missed Stanzie on my birthday trip back to Texas. 21 now! It’s my moon time and I know I’ll have trouble sleeping tonight. I usually do.
