In reversal of Bush administration policy, United States President Barack Obama will sign the United Nations declaration that calls for the decriminalisation of homosexuality. By signing the document submitted by France in December, President Obama wants to show that the importance of respecting the human rights of all people knows no exceptions.

The declaration, signed by 66 UN member states, has been rejected by several countries but the US was the only western state not to sign it. Homosexuality is not permitted in at least 70 countries and in some cases, is even punishable by death.
