skiing TWO (electric boogaloo)

I know that there are some people who perform the act of snowboarding and receive some sort of enjoyment from it. I've seen them, they are an attractive people who eat healthy things for breakfast and drive vans. I thought that maybe I too could be one of those people. That is why I chose to partake of this activity on Sunday ( Read more... )

Do you hear that sound?

That is an ovation. It is a very strange ovation, as it is not simultaneous. That is because I doubt everyone is reading this at once. But I am pretty certain everyone is applauding after they read it....

And it may be because it is 3:30 in the morning, and the fact that I am exhausted after dancing for hours on end at Vertex, and the fact that my blood sugar is dangerously low due to the dancing until 3am at Vertex, but I'm gonna let you in on a little theorey I have: I believe Alyssa is fully aware of the Deadly but Adorable thing. But don't worry, I'll keep it all hush-hush anyways (y'know, because of the deadly part - for both our sakes....)

Anyways, please keep skiing and writing - we all need more laughter in our lives.

That was an extremely nice message, thank you very much.

So who went to Vertex and why didn't anybody tell me?

I went solo.

If there is a Vertex grapevine, I have never managed to garden it. (Bad analogy, but it is the best I can do off the cuff at the moment....)

I went snowboarding - once. I wanted to learn, so I went for a story. I got a lesson. Me and a bunch of sixth-graders and the instuctor.
I told him I raced slalom and GS on a team and he warned me that logtime skiers like me have problems. Apparently, we like to leaninto the turns like we're racing and umm, as you discovered, this does not work on boards.
I never got off the bunny hill.
I did however, master one turn at a time. But if I did more than one, I fell. I ripped my gloves from palm to wrist, and slammed my tailbone a hundred times. Finally, I walked off.
That night, I made the fatal mistake of going to Vertex.
Mike played Killing Joke. I danced. My tailbone "popped." It hurt. I then made the more fatal mistake of thinking that I should continue to dance and it would "go back in."
That did it.
I had to limp out. By morning, I could NOT walk. I was out of work for 5 days. Couldn't even get to the toilet on my own.

oh Joy. I'd love to go boarding again but am scared shitless of injuring myself yet further!

Oh Kevin... I trust life has been good to you and you've had a good run at it, yes?

...That's the kind of thing you were expecting me to say, right? It's no secret among many, that strange things exist in this world that cause me to become giddy with utter glee and act cute: tonberrys, cactars, chocubos, devil duckies, bunny rabbits, 80's synth pop, chocolate chip cookies, a really good asskicking in a kung fu movie, the list goes on. (go ahead Gil, but slowly and one at a time. try not to take so much joy in outting me) Nicely packed, white powdery snow, apparently, is another of them. Who knew?

It's a good quality Alyssa, I'm glad you embrace it.

I'm looking forward to getting the unabridged list from Gil...

First time out I spent above the normal half of the time snowboarding on my butt. For one reason or another I started surf music in my head, in particular, wipeout, which seemed particularly apt. In any case, the more I had surf music in my head the better I seemed to do. Somehow the hard reality of the ice always was less forgiving than water -- still, as a technique it might buy you those few extra seconds to slam into a tree versus the ice.

Oh I heard music Airwick, it's the music you hear in movies when the whole platoon gets wiped out in an ambush. It didn't help any with my rhythm but it did wonders for my self-pity.
