On Friday I wrapped up at Optus. As can be expected, I have mixed feelings about it all. It was my first real job out of uni (we won't talk about Key Media). The shift work and many inexplicable management decisions were the hardest things to deal with, but it really was a decent job that paid well. I learned a lot of things about managing peoples' emotions and expectations, and got more than an insight into the complicated processes that go behind the scenes of consumer service delivery.
Good experience, but it was definitely time to go. I was totally over the shift work, and call centre management looked like my only option at career progression.
My send-off was pretty well-timed. The weekend previous, the last of the Sydney staff had moved into the Macquarie Park campus, so the company was putting on a big party. Thirsty Merc were playing live, and there was free food at the onsite pub. If I didn't know better, I'd think that Optus was just happy for my change in career ;-)
I started at Symantec yesterday. I'm still settling in, sorting out things like laptop, mobile, e-mail, system logins, product knowledge. It's obvious I'm needed in the field ASAP, but that's not going to happen until we're sure that I'll be ok with the clients. I'll be working for some pretty heavy hitters, so I don't want to sound like a total ignoramus (that's the problem with going from consumer to enterprise spaces - everything is really different, and the customers know when you're bullshitting).
Still, there's a spam filtering gateway in South Australia that's doing weird things, so I'll be looking into that tomorrow. A little hands-on stuff, anyway.
I'll be moving around a lot. Once I get an idea of what my movements will be like, I'll start contacting people to meet up in the city and stuff.
