Kakadu

At the end of a very long month I am pleased to have arrived in Kakadu.

This area contains a lot of history and is still a very active region politically regarding uranium mining, as well as being a major tourist attraction and destination. The reason I am here however is the wildlife reserve itself, with large expanses of tropical and exotic costal ( Read more... )

My reaction is the same.

Sitting behind my desk this time last year, I never would have imagined travelling through Kakadu.

Now I am here behind the wheel of my old Land-Rover ready to trek through the wilderness.

In Russian, Kakadu means cockatoo. Why is the place named so?

According to a few of my friends Kakadu, also means Cockatoo in German too?

My thoughts are that the land title must be Kakadu, is a misinterpretation of the Aboriginal word Gaagudju.

Ah, I see. Probably, a Kakadu meaning a cockatoo came into Russian from German.

The origin of words is quite confusing in Australia.

Anyone would think we just make it up as we go along?
