Last night I went to the
Bottom of the Hill to see
Film School. Courtney and I showed up early enough to catch most of the first band
Citizens Here and Abroad, they were awesome. I can't remember the last time I was so impressed with a performance by a band I had never heard before. I thought of Jenn, thinking of shows we have been to together, and I'm sure that if she were at this one she would have a had a similar reaction, "wow, they're good and danceable too!" (They are playing on April 10th at
Spaceland, a FREE night! Hmm... LA roadrip?)
The second band was called
Sound Team, from Austin, TX. Their first song was really boring but then the rest of the set was really good. They kept saying their name and yet I could never understand it. First of all, I don't like the real name but I was thinking they were saying: Sound Tooth, Saw Tooth, Sine Tooth... something TOOTH, all of which would have been better than Sound Team. But the truth is they really were like a sound team because they had a lot of different sonic textures going on at once so I guess it's appropriate. They had 2 guitars, bass, drums and about 4 keyboards. Anyway, they are really good and seem like a nice bunch of unpretentious guys. I get that vibe from the few Austin bands I've seen.
Finally, Film School were really good, but I have to say I was the least impressed with them of the 3 bands. Their music is incredible, they create incredible textures and wailing walls of guitar sound but the singer... he's okay. Throughout the set he sounded increasingly like early Robert Smith-a LOT like Robert Smith. The last 3 encore songs were my favorites. Also there was a really creepy groupie girl dancing on the side of the stage, I had to look away from her in order to enjoy the music. I wanted to throw some wet toilet paper at her. I don't even want to describe her antics for you to understand my pain because I want to spare you, and spare myself the memory of it.

Last week I saw
Colin Meloy's solo show and that was great. I didn't have the best experience seeing the decemberists for the first time; it was predictable, but Colin's solo performance was fresh and had a fun, intimate energy, and he was pretty funny in the chit chat department.
Thus begins my SF show-going experience of the new millennium. A+
In general my favorite band right now is Kings of Convenience who I recently heard for the first time. Where have I been? I've been passing this band on my alley for years now... Red House Painters too.
