“Whew!” Vernon was out of breath. “You’d think they’d put the parking closer.”
“Isn’t it beautiful,Vernon. We can see all of London from here.”
“I don’t know why you wanted to come here and not the seashore as usual.”
“Come on Vernon, I’ll fix your plate.” Petunia set the table with silver and cloth napkins.
Vernon pecked her cheek, “Happy Birthday.”
“Not out here in the open. Anyone could see.”
“Sorry dear.”
Let’s see what I packed.” She began pulling items from the basket.
“Fried chicken? You know I hate chicken.”
“Well, it’s nice at a picnic. I brought sausage sandwiches as well.”
“Vernon, do you see that?”
“You mean that heart thingy?”
“Schoolgirls come here, wishing for that special beau. Lily and I did. She got James…and I got…”
“Me,” Vernon interrupted, “Lily got the short straw.”
Petunia’s lips became very thin. She lay back, remembering that day. Lily wished on James…..and Lily got James.
But Lily giggled at Petunia's wish. Lily said he was already taken. How embarrassed she had been when she found out.
Now he was dead, struck down by family. Again, Petunia was jealous of Lily. She was up there with Sirius.
She hated wizards.
