Major layoffs at work today...
Unfortunately - or not, depending on how you look at it - I was one of the scientists canned. My best friend was another. They sat both of us down at the same time to tell us, which I thought was a little strange. But it made it easier to handle, so I don't mind that part so much.
Anyway, what a strange feeling.
I've never been fired or laid off from a job, not even my crappy high school ones, so today was definitely surreal. The company is doing far worse than we all thought, so the layoffs - six people so far - caught us off guard. I was in shock at first, then upset whenever someone came up to me to say how sorry they were, yadda yadda. As soon as I left the office, after taking an hour to pack up my belongings and do my timesheet, I just felt relieved not to have to deal with that place any more.
Now the hunt for my dream job begins...
