My second semester of grad school starts tonight. Sort of looking forward to it and sort of not. I found a great opportunity for grad students with the National Park Service that I have to look into immediately. Deadline is the 29th. That alone has increased my interest in continuing in my program.
Of course, since it is the first day of a new semester, my day has not been ideal. I skipped the gym this morning since I knew it would be too long of a day if I got up that early. That naturally led to me sleeping too late, so I did not have time to wash my hair this morning. Now I feel greasy even though I did shower and I put on a ball cap about halfway through the day because my hair was driving me nuts.
Then I decided that I should go for a long walk during lunch so the day wouldn't be a total loss for exercise. We have old railroad tracks running behind the office that lead to old sandpits that I used to go off-roading around. Between the tracks and the Pine Barren sand, it makes for a challenging walk. The walk was great until about two-thirds of the way back - I took a different path that led to a really huge puddle. Instead of turning around to head for the drier path, I decided to find a way to cross the puddle. I spotted some dry vegetation to one side where the puddle thinned out and tried to cross. Inevitably, my foot sunk and so did the other as I scrambled across. So, week old sneakers soaked in icky puddle water and I had a good 5 minute walk back to the office in chilly temperatures. It wasn't too bad, really. Nearly four hours later, my pantlegs and both socks are dry. My sneakers? Well, they kinda smell and have some drying left to do.
So, I am going to class with greasy hair and stinky feet. And if anyone says something, I am going to kick them with said stinky feet. Though, I don't think it really matters, since I showed up to class a few times last semester reeking of fuel oil or gasoline from having been in the field that day. Smelly feet should be par for the course.
