And got myself a beer... Ok... So it was really a Diet Rock Star. I'm on my way to SFSU, and as the magic cocktail begins to kick my arse in gear, and since I left my favorite toy for the commute in the grad darkroom on Monday(iPod), I figured I'd take the time to write a bit of a review of The Mission UK's latest release, a 3-disc set of songs recorded by BBC during their career before Wayne Hussey disbanded The Mission UK.
At first listen, I was a little surprised to hear many tracks that were on the "Phonogram Years" compilation. The Mission has a habit of recycling riffs, and I was wondering if Wayne was trying to recycle an album to meet contractual obligations with a record label.
The more I listened, the more I was pleasantly surprised by the mix of live in the studio and live at a venue recordings that made up this collection. It's interesting to hear how the variations to "Severina," "Tower of Strength," and a few others came to be.
The packaging is nice, and it's a nice retrospective glimpse into a band that I wish I had seen live, but I think it's something that the die hard fans will enjoy. At $40 for the 3 disc import, it is something to complete the collection with, but not something to start. I'd give it 3.5/5. The fan in me wanted to give over 4/5, but I'll let my critic side win this time.
Later Peeps!
