The first time that I ever remember hearing about Ja Rule was when I was in seventh grade. A friend of mine had a CD of his. I think that there was a picture of him looking pretty hard with a bandana or something. When I first starting hearing his music I got a different impression. Or maybe I heard some earlier stuff first I don't remember. The first stuff I really REMEMBER hearing that song he did with J. Lo (which I heard today and enjoyed).
Sometimes a group of friends would hang out. I would be a part of that group sometimes. We would do lots of cool things like watching cool movies like Breakin' and play cool games like GTA II and lounge in the hot tub and ride around town on skateboards and do cool tricks and film them so we could later add the fish-eye effect with iMovie. We did one skate video called Skatonia I think. And also another one but I don't remember the name. So, sometimes when we were hanging out we would have the cool MTV on. This was during the time period of that Ja Rule hit single that I mentioned earlier. That song is really really good. He also has some other really good songs.
Soon after I started hanging out with another friend. We would have late night sessions after wild and crazy summer days in which we would eat pickles and chips and salsa and other things while we searched for sweet late night television (I promise there is NOTHING sexual about this!!!) Sometimes there were funny movies or television shows or cool music videos. This was around the time of some other Ja Rule hot single with Ashanti. This song was really good also. This led me to believe that Ja Rule was really good. He was funny. He had a great voice and a funny face. He made great duets with top female modern R&B singers.
A few years later another friend of mine made me a copy (because I wasn't yet confident enough to invest in an actual album) of R.U.L.E. I was pretty excited even though the album did not contain any of the hits that I have previously mentioned. I gave it the once over and found it to contain much mediocraty. Sure there are a couple great hits and a few okay b-sides, but the bulk is a rap filler jelly sandwich. There's that hit that he did featuring R. Kelly and Ashanti. I like it okay. Theres also New York I think it's called though it may have Fat Joe. I think there is one other hit and maybe one other good song but the point is I was let down.
I have come to realize that Ja Rule really shines only in duets with ladies or other feminine singers/ artists.
