This is where the summer ends

Jun 09, 2010 18:15

Who: Severus Snape and anyone who decides to join him.
Where: Winthers Lake, Sector 7
When: June 9th, approx. 3:00 PM
What: Snape decides to put on his investigatin' shoes and check out the freaky ass lake of doom.
Warnings: Probably some radiation sickness. Snape being Snape. Snape proving why he'd be someone PETA would refuse to accept donations from. The rats are transfigured from bricks and so technically not really rats but whatever.
Note: Join him if you like? Seriously. Just tag in. Do an action post or third person or interpretive dance. I don't care what you do. Otherwise it'll be a sad little oneshot.

All roads had lead to the lake. Every single line of information he had researched had ended up here. Winthers Lake.

The wanton destruction caused by the earthquake and the warnings of radioactivity were not enough to discourage Severus from researching the lake. In fact, it actually served to make him more eager to examine the turbulent waters in the seventh sector. It was an opportunity to see one of the strange occurrences that he had read about in the newspaper archives while it was happening. It could be, of course, that whatever had been reported had just been made up. This was a chance to confirm it all.

There were risks, of course. But Severus was quite willing to face any health ramifications. If he was right, then this lake had something to do with this mysterious 'Core' that was supposed to be responsible for everything that had gone wrong in this city.

Severus stopped when he was fifteen feet away from the lake, setting the battered suitcase he carried onto the ground. With a wave of his wand the telescoping legs shot out from the bottom and the lid snapped open. Five bricks stacked themselves neatly on the ground, an enchanted pen and notebook set themselves up, ready to take notes. An army of glass phials and bottles marched out and settled themselves along the edges of the suitcase, ready to be filled. Once all of his instruments were set up, Severus knelt down beside the bricks. He touched his wand to the topmost brick, transfiguring it into a large rust-coloured rat. Severus levitated the squeaking rodent to the edge of the water.

With a sharp downward motion, Severus dunked the struggling creature into the bubbling, hissing water. He counted aloud, removing the rat from the water after he had reached five. The rodent was hardly recognizable. He pulled it toward himself, setting it down on the grass in front of himself. The fur had been burned off in places, disgusting boils were rising on the naked skin. The rat didn't even try to get away from him when he released it from the spell. It just lie there, making unhappy chattering noises.

A flash of green light ended the rat's misery. Severus vanished the corpse and stood up, selecting one of the glass vials and walking to the water's edge. The water was bubbling, erupting in a geyser a mere three yards away from him. Snape jerked back, reaching up to wipe away the dampness from his upper lip. The wizard looked down at his bloodied palm, then touched his nose gently. He stared down at the blood once more. His nose was bleeding. From the closeness of the lake?

No, that didn't matter. He cleaned his hand and face with his wand. The blood flow would stop soon. He directed the vial out into the lake, his fingers trembling as he dipped the glass container into the next frothing water. The untreated material quickly dissolved in the toxic water, so Severus had to get another - and another - and another until finally he had found a container that would not melt on contact. He cleaned off the outside of the vial and put a stopper in it, setting the water down by his bricks.

And now what? Severus retreated, cleaning his bloody face again. He pinched the bridge of his nose and tilted his head back. He had not expected the lake's effects to appear so suddenly. He was probably in far worse danger than he had previously imagined.
