Kei hadn't had the chance to be afraid of a hospital bed before. Her dire experience with the infirmary had been softened by the faces of those she'd loved standing around her: Doctor Zero, her Flourite Crew...the Captain. Even with the few seconds of panic that came with waking up in a strange place, it was gone in a flash.

It was not so in this place. There would be no friends to greet and tease her here: just florescent light and a high, unfamiliar ceiling. Kei grimaced, blinking her eyes into focus and shifted, slowly trying to make sense of the world bustling all around her. It was very noisy.

Moving much more than that made for uncomfortable work on her part; she grunted, pushing herself up with the palms of her hands and flinched when her leg shifted with her. There was no ignoring that anymore-- it still burned and ached.

Well, what do you expect? She put it aside for the moment, taking time to scan her environment, particularly the array of machinery. All so outdated and clunky to her, but everything had its purpose, after all...

It was rather outdated and clunky to Dr. Yumeno too, but in this mad hospital scramble of a trial by fire, he was learning his way around the foreign equipment and new trauma center terminology quickly, for his first week on duty.

Still, working in high-adrenaline mode under this kind of intensive pressure was unfamiliar terrain, such that he was even beginning to doubt how he was ever qualified to be Chief of Medicine for an entire city without ever having experienced a night quite as challenging as this.

"Please remain on your back." Daedalus spoke softly, looking up from reading the dosimeter wand he'd been holding over her injured leg for a quick scan, measuring the radiation count.

Oh--How'd she miss that? Kei blinked, looking a lost for a moment before even starting to regard the order. She sank back by sliding the weight off her hands to her elbows, not too enthused with laying totally back and having the ceiling for a view. Ceilings didn't talk.

"What time is it-?" she asked, grimacing at the hoarseness of her voice.

Disoriented, naturally, but responsive. That was good. He scrawled something quickly on her charts, then looked back to her-

Most patients treated tonight were behind handled at rapid pace, making brisk work, but he'd made a point of checking back up on this one- He'd seen her over the network.

"A little after midnight... you're probably still very dizzy from hemorrhaging, but we're stopped it and you'll be getting a fresh dressing within the hour." For all the chaos, Daedalus was pleasant-toned when working one on one with a patient, curtained off from the rest of the makeshift beds. "And we're going to put you on androstenediol to treat your exposure..."

Midnight...? Kei frowned, sending a hand through her hair. What a mess. It'd take a while to clean out the wig, but at least it stayed in place throughout that ordeal. And to've been out so long...

She made a sound, as if to ask something, but cut short as the doctor continued on. Androstenediol made about as much sense as Sanskrit to Kei; Doctor Zero may've been rather brilliant at keeping everyone in one piece, but he never did so on the big words or that level of professionalism...She snagged a tangle, clicking her tongue. Exposure, huh.

"Some kind of injection, then...?"

"Yes." He nodded tiredly, indicating the IV-tube already taped against her arm. "Possibly some steroids, and an electrolyte drip."

Daedalus leaned in quieter then, lowering his voice as the rod beeped and gave him another reading- Dangerous levels, but nothing nearing lethal territory. Good.

"You're one of the other newcomers, aren't you- I saw your distress call come in, so I was expecting you here. Shiroe told me that the lake had reported radiation contaminants even before this disaster happened."

Kei cast a fleeting glance to the tube in place as he spoke, blinking and impulsively leaning back with the closing of distance-- not that there was far to move in her position. Again, she made to speak up, but again he had words of his own, and they definitely raised eyebrows. She hadn't expected any medics on the network, quite honestly, and the odds of being tended to one in the same situation didn't seem too good to her. But, hell. She'd take it.

"Months before," she confirmed, her own tone quiet. "I'd tested it myself for a while, but--" There was really no telling where his loyalties were, was there? She'd keep vague enough. "Who are you?"

"Dr. Daedalus Yumeno." He smiled, pleasantly as the situation could afford, tucking the charts away and pulling up a chair for even the briefest excuse to sit down and let his own heart stop racing for a moment, take a small breather while catching her up. "I spoke about the water quality after dark a few days ago?"

"I'm still relatively new here (Ah, you're at Skye Medical, by the way)...what a way to get broken into the job, huh?" He winced, gesturing to the ongoing ruckus in the halls. If any nurses came in frantic, he'd go back to where immediate attention was needed, but for now he decided to be sure this woman was comfortably at ease.

"You'll be alright. Things might seem a little...hectic right now, but you're far from the worst case we've seen come through our doors tonight."

The name wasn't familiar to her; Kei gave an apologetic shake of the head in reply to the name and the notion of a few days ago. She was going to have to start keeping on top of things a lot better, seemed like.

"I'd think so," she replied, an air of lightness diffusing the overall grim atmosphere. "And I'd rather not take up space here if I don't have to. How long do I have to stay?"

"Well, right now you've been admitted upstairs." He explains, glad that she's taking things well, at least. "Because you may have had contact with lakewater, we're going to keep you here a minimum of twenty-four hours for additional monitoring, to make sure your radiation poisoning isn't so severe."

"Is there anyone you'd like us to try and contact for you?"

A sigh. Kei really, really didn't want to end up staying. It showed just a little on her expression--just a twinge of a grimace. Still. Twenty-four hours could've been a lot worse, had Kakashi not shown up as fast as he had and all. Sitting in that lake water deserved a bit more concern than she really wanted to give, especially when that concern involved sitting still for too long.

As far as contacting went...Kei gave a glance around, a hand going to her waist. "Ah, I should still have my NV with me for something like that..."

"Ah." She'll find she's already been changed into a hospital gown, but Dr. Daedalus is attentive enough to guess what she's going for, and ducks beneath the bed to search through the possessions she was brought in, already plastic bagged and tagged up.

"The NV..."I figured you might want that handy- One moment." He handed it over. "Here. You...haven't happened to be having any trouble with yours since last week by any chance, have you?"

piracyinpink June 9 2010, 22:59:20 UTC
"By trouble," Kei took the NV with a nod, still frowning with thought, "you're implying you must've had some of your own, right? I can't say I've noticed anything odd with mine recently, though."

"There's a virus circulating through image files of tarot cards." He shrugs, checking her over, making a few more small notations. "It's been a bother, but hasn't rendered it completely non-functional."

"So...aside from the leg, as we're taking care of that...how are you feeling?"

Her frown deepened at the mention of the virus. Centuries ahead technology-wise, sure, but she was never much of a hacker or the like. Maybe Shiroe...

"Mm?" Kei blinked, looking back up from her NV. She gave a wan smirk at the question. "Ah, well...Considering the circumstances..." Her eyes rolled up a bit, regarding the mess of her hair. "I suppose it could be worse. After all that time in the water..."

He considered her carefully, placing the dosimeter aside.

"How long would you say you were submerged?"
