WOO LET'S DO THIS cactusnwhiskey December 1 2011, 20:25:47 UTC
Jake drove up in his old rusty pickup truck, his internal CD player blaring good old country music though the windows. It had been cheap from a farmer in Sector 7, and more importantly it was his style: thirteen years old and still going strong even after all the dents from farming equipment and the like. He turned off the truck and an almost audible sigh of relief swept through the officers outside. But Jake didn't seem to hear them, or if he did he didn't seem to care. He was more concerned by the fact he was a little late to the crime scene, but only because he'd been given the case just a few minutes ago. None of the usual Homicide detectives were available and Jake was really the only option. He had experience with homicide before. And to be honest Jake had jumped at the chance. He almost saw this as whatever "higher power" ruling over his life was giving him a sort of test. Well, he wasn't going to allow himself to screw this up ( ... )

It's always fairly easy to find out when Jake is around, and that's by the sound of his music and the looks on people's faces. Re-l had gotten used to hearing the country music coming from his office when he was going through his paperwork and, frankly, she'd come to find it a little relaxing. The sound wasn't one she was used to (as Romdeau had nothing of the sort back home), but she liked it anyway. Especially when it meant he was in a good mood.

That part, however, was what made her raise an eyebrow as he wandered in the door. "You look like you've just had the best day of your life, Jake Marshall." He looked far too pleased for a murder scene and while she was glad to be working with him, it seemed a little out of place. She wouldn't call him on it, though; if he was cheerful, then let him be. He might actually help her feel better with all of this going on. Better a happy partner than a gloomy one, as hypocritical as that might be ( ... )

At having his huge, Cheshire grin pointed out to him, Jake stopped for a second, then tried to tone his enthusiasm down. Tried, mind you. It didn't work. "Well, it's the best I've had in the Port, that's fer damn sure." He adjusted his hat on his head with a bit of gusto. "Ain't often a detective gets an opportunity like this, 'specially not after less'n six months on the Force." He looked back down at his file, not really reading it, just, admiring it. A real homicide case file in his hands. A small laugh escaped from his throat. "Feels almost like the badge is back on the sheriff, y'know? Like everything's right in the world again. Almost." He knew this was only temporary. But who knew? Perhaps this job would prove he was good enough for a full-time Homicide detective position ( ... )

"I'm surprised you didn't get tossed onto a murder case before now, actually," she said with a smile. He'd mentioned in his application to the force that he had been on homicide before. Why they didn't give him the opportunity to spread his wings - as it were - was beyond her. But she was glad that he was back in his element. She'd gone through plenty of murder cases in her time in the Port, but that was only because she had pushed herself into the Joker and Newcomer Killer cases and people began to expect she was better than she was. At least she had Jake by her side on this one, someone with legitimate experience ( ... )
