[Larry, amazingly, is on time. He had ended up late on several dates in the past for one reason or another - he needed a ride, he found a ride but he managed to crash it into something, he didn't need a ride but ended up lost while looking for the woman's house - but this was one of those rare occasions when he managed to leave early (at least, early enough) without a hitch. Setting his alarm clock really paid off; he had made a mental note to do this more often ( ... )

[There are several impressive things about Larry Butz's appearance tonight, Franziska realizes begrudgingly. First, there was the fact that he had shown up at all, let alone early. Secondly, he'd dressed up. She hadn't really been expecting that -- certainly, he'd gone as far as to wear a cravat to the masquerade, but an event such as that merited such behavior.

This, however, was really just bowling. She tried to push the new surge of uneasiness away.]

Ah, Larry Butz. You're actually on time, I see.

Like I said, I set my alarm, marked my calendar...I should do that more often!

[He lights up and tucks his hat under his arm. Well, even if this was only bowling, it never hurt to dress up just a bit. It wasn't like he was wearing anything that would snag or rip or end up dirty.]

[It was almost flattering to think that a constant bumbling fool of a man would go to such effort to ensure that he wasn't late for a meeting with her. She was almost certain that he had never been punctual for anything else in his entire life before now. Yet, she wouldn't let herself get too carried away -- perhaps he had just decided it was time to acquire some practical life skills. She almost snorts when that thought crossed her mind; how preposterous! It probably did have something largely to do with her; she supposed she should appreciate that effort.]

Right. Well, what now?

[A pause, and then she clears her throat.]

I've never been bowling before, but I'm sure I'll be able to pick it up just fine.
