Later in the day on the second day of Raphael's imprisonment, Amy arrived as she promised. As long as her father was here in jail, she would continue to visit, staying as long as she could by her father's side. There was nothing more she could ask for. Ever since the incident, though, she had refused to take blood-- all out of pride and a reluctance to let anyone help her as long as her father was here behind bars. This afternoon, Amy was beginning to look pale and weary, although not as weary as her father was. She worried greatly about him.

"Father... how are you?"

"Amy..." Raphael forced himself upright, taking a breath and vowing not to let his weakness show. No matter how exhausted he got, he refused to worry his daughter any more than she already was.

He stood from the cot and took a step towards the bars, reaching through them to take her hand. "I am fine, my dear. You needn't worry for me."

Silently, Amy moved to press against the bars, seeing as much as an embrace she could get from her father. Despite it only being two days, she despised the fact that she had to wait. She hated most of all that the core could choose to take anyone at a moment's notice. She did not want Raphael to leave her sight.

Raphael reached through the bars to put his arms around her, stroking her hair affectionately.

"You don't look well," he said, noticing her pale complexion. "Are you eating?"

"I have eaten the normal food, but I refuse to drink, father. I don't feel that it is right-- not when you are here suffering." Amy sighed, trying to press closer but only feeling cold steel meet her cheek.

"Mon ange, don't do that," Raphael said. "You must take care of yourself. I will worry about you otherwise."

He frowned, shaking his head. "I have had several people offer to allow you to drink. I'm sure at least one of them will be suitable."

"..." Amy was silent then. She had to follow her father's mandate and stay healthy so he could be at peace.

"I will see among them, father. Did anyone we know offer?"

He stroked her hair again delicately, doing his best to smile reassuringly for her. "We needn't both suffer as long as I'm here," he said.

"Mlle. Mayer did offer. I assumed you would accept her, at least."

"I would. She has always been gracious to us. Even if..." She trails off. She still feels bitterness towards the law, and fear as well. It still puts her at unease to remember that Re-l is part of the law in the Port. She can't reconcile the ideas of her being so kind to them while the law imprisoned her father.

"I know," he said quickly. "I know." He was angry with her too, disgusted how someone who claims to be so concerned for Amy would not understand what he had to do, and would try to force them apart this way.

"But she has offered. It is wise to take advantage of what people offer freely, so long as you are not dependent on it and so long as you are wary of their intentions." A Sorel family motto if there ever was one. "Mlle. Mayer claims to care for you."

"Yes, father," Amy listened keenly to her father's words-- determined to follow whatever he said. After all, he knew best. And although Amy was one keen on surviving, Raphael knew what it was like to be part of a society and not be just a streetrat, invisible to the world.

"I would accept her care."

It was better than having no one to trust when they were apart.

"She at least seems to have your interests at heart. You have good judgment and can protect yourself, Amy. If you suspect something is amiss, you are more than capable of making it alone."

He frowned at the very thought of her needing to. But he had Mayer's word, after all. If something did happen to Amy while he was trapped in here... oh, she would have hell to pay.

"I am told there are options to lower my supposed sentence. I will exhaust them and be freed as soon as possible. That is my promise to you, my dear."

"I will hold you to that, then." Amy spoke quietly, earnest as she regarded her father. Despite the earlier broken promise of keeping himself free, Amy still wanted to believe in him, especially after all the lengths he had gone to for her sake. She wanted to do everything she could.

"I would want to help you, too."

"I know, mon fille. At this time... it is best we do not do anything rash. We are at a disadvantage in understanding the way justice is said to work in this place," he said. As tempting as the idea of breaking out was, it might only lead to more problems, and he certainly wouldn't want Amy getting involved with it.

"But you are very brave, Amy. I'm proud of you."

"I will continue to be brave, father. For the both of us."

Amy reached through the bars, wanting to hold her father back against her. He had been the only family she knew-- what with her own parents gone when she was too young to remember it. There were people who took care of her, but in the Rouen slums, it was every streetrat for themselves.

With Raphael, Amy found solidarity-- solace-- respite from the difficulty of surviving. Even if they still had to survive now, she was alright as long as she could stay by her father's side.
