[OPEN] Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival

Jul 26, 2011 14:02

Who: OPEN to the public!
When: Daylight hours on Monday, 26th of July
Where: Orchard Street Elementary School, Sector 5
Summary: A fundraiser for the 5th school district's art program. Advertised here in the news!
Warnings: Abominable Cuteness.

At the front entrance to the school, there are two booths:

One is a lemonade stand, with several industrious 4th graders counting out bills into the cashbox and mixing up pitchers with powdered sugar, water, and lots of ice PTA moms keep restocking their coolers with. Paper cups are passed out for 3 dollars each, with a garbage bin nearby with a hand-drawn sign that reminds artists to "Help Keep The Port Clean! Don't Be A Litterbug!" A child's ladybug drawing is attached.

The second booth is for registration, and manned by the 5th grade student council. There is a map of the block surrounding the school, with numbered markers that indicate which square of sidewalk 'canvas' you're 'renting' for the day. These kids take donations and pass out pails of colored chalk.

The principal and art teacher are wearing judges badges, strolling along the curbside. They look pleased with the turnout, and stop to comment on some of the nicer entries.

And finally there is an earth science teacher from the nearby middle school, who happens to have powers that can shift the clouds, frantically waving her arms in the air to sweep any darker rainclouds that threaten to encroach directly overhead far out of the way.

It's a sunny day at the Orchard Street School. Families crown the sidewalk on hands and knees- it's a spirited summer affair.
