Liquid was on their side. A part of Philanthropy.
Otacon had been insistent on that fact, all those months ago when Snake had first ended up here in the city.
Of course, Snake had been suspicious. Seemed too good to be true, after all. But with being mysteriously yanked out of time and space, told he'd lost months of his memory, and suddenly seeing Master Miller and Big Boss alive again as well...all that was more than enough to handle on its own. If Liquid was behaving himself, Snake wasn't going to throw stones. He may not like his brother, but that didn't mean Snake was out to get him. Last thing he wanted was another pointless fight to the death. Live and let live, and all that. So he tolerated him. Even got close to actually talking with him a couple times. But it's not that easy.
For all the exposure they had to each other in the city, Snake didn't really know Liquid all the much more. Regrettable, maybe. There's a lot of history in the way, on both sides. And despite all appearances on Liquid's part, neither one of them was really the sharing type. The small moments of solidarity they managed were few and far between. (The day Miller vanished, Liquid noticing that Snake was lonely and then doing something about it; Snake dragging him to a bed when Liquid hurt himself and passed out on the floor-) Everything else was wary sarcasm and arguments and varying levels of defensiveness and antagonism. Bordering on brotherly at best, but at worst it had the potential to be Shadow Moses all over again.
Things had been getting steadily tenser between them ever since he left and came back, and now it seemed Liquid really was back to his old tricks. Snake couldn't feel more the fool for letting him and his friends get away with it. Though the plan had been Kadaj's idea, it wasn't surprising that Snake had jumped to the conclusions he had. After all, it wasn't the first time Liquid had sunk so low to get what he wanted. Snake had been in Re-l's position back on Shadow Moses, or close enough. Caught, tortured, with Meryl's life hanging in the balance as well. All while his captor openly enjoyed it. And all on Liquid's orders. Even with Liquid making friends like Yaha, Snake had let down his guard, given Liquid the benefit of the doubt and let himself believe that his brother had been serious about behaving himself. And someone else had paid for it.
Snake approached the Outer Heaven warehouse on foot, silently, and eased open the perpetually unlocked door. He half-expected to find the place empty. They had to know this was the first place he would look for them. And he was looking. But there were the motorbikes, hidden in the corner of the overgrown first floor. All the affirmation he needed that his hunch had payed off. But he doesn't bother to reach for his weapon.
He doesn't want to kill Liquid. He just wants to kick his ass.
