[So she'd buried herself in work. Paperwork, actually, since that's all Phoenix seemed to have around him. The easier stuff she could manage - but the documents full of legalese made her cross-eyed, so that she just organized for him instead]
[She'd been at this for a while - not even bothering to pin her hair up like usual. With no appetite and nightmares keeping her up at night, she'd poured herself over these documents - mindlessly shuffling through them. She didn't even hear the knock, although the door was unlocked]

But since he was expecting the worst, and had dreamed up a whole bunch of possible scenarios, nothing could really prepare him for the sight of Maya as she was, unkempt and tired looking, dark eyed, maybe a little ill. It shocked him into stunned silence, which he broke half a minute later since she hadn't seemed to notice him at all.]
Maya?

[Her attention finally caught, she looked up away from her work, and spotted him. Confused by the expression on his face, she blinked tiredly at him a few times and gave a puzzled frown]
Did you need something, Nick?

[He crept in warily, looking around. Man it was dark, but then there was no power, and only that tiny window...]
What're you doing?

I guess...
[She looked around to the piles of papers she'd already worked on. There were a few piles she'd managed to complete on her own - and the rest were neatly stacked together and labeled with sticky notes.]
Ah... I was just trying to get some stuff done.

[He'd been really worried. Still, he went over to the desk, looking over the paperwork warily. Wow, she'd really done a lot.]
This is great. We're going to be able to tidy up the filing system properly with all this done. [Pause.] Actually I have some good news...

What is it?

[Now he actually had to say it out loud it feels weird. He'd expected Maya to have looked on her NV, so now he has to explain from scratch. Maybe she'll be happy, though. He has to hope for that.]
Trucy's back.

[It clicks. Trucy... his daughter. Apollo's assistant. She was safe after all - she turned up again, even though it was months later. She manages a small smile at that]
That is good news, Nick. She turned out to be okay after all, just like I....

[She curses herself for being so selfish when a pang of pain floats up, and quickly pins her smile back up - though it's a little more forced now]
So what are you still doing here, Nick? Go and see her.

[Was worried about you.]
I'm worried that maybe I won't be good enough. A lot can happen in seven years, you know. I want her to really know what the difference in time between us means before we see each other. And I'm...afraid.
[What if I lose her again? What if she gets attacked like Maya was, or...attacked by a monster or something? It's a whole lot of responsibility I'm not sure I'm ready for.]

You'll be fine. Future Nick managed, didn't he?

[He was teasing, of course - trying - moving over to sit opposite her.]
You're going to help me out, right?

I dunno anything about being a daddy, Nick...
[That... makes her pause again. It would be better if she stayed out of their way, wouldn't it? Especially when she was like this. And yet he's asking for her help]
Well, I... if that's what you want, then... I'll try.

It's what I want. Besides which I can't go out with her when she tries on clothes, can I, and she can't wear that cape forever. You'd be up for a bit of shopping, right?
Reply
It would probably be better if it was just the two of you.
