I am so sorry I seemed to have misplaced this log somehow! the_highcost February 16 2011, 19:31:56 UTC
Kahve was such a mainstay with a lot of people now, and Death was rather proud of that. Maybe she didn't know what she was doing when she took over the place, but she knew what she was doing now.

More or less, really. There were still a few kinks to work out, but she was hiring those who needed to work, and if she could at least provide steady employment, then that was okay in her book. Plus, more workers meant she had more time to sit and talk with some people who came in for a little bit more then the coffee.

And those who didn't, as she watched Harry Dresden get his coffee as usual and go outside, again, as usual. And for right now, she was in a pretty talkative mood, as she slid out the door and made her way to the table. It was cold, but then, that had never mattered to her.

Harry had seen the dark haired young woman around before at the shop, although he wasn't aware that she was the owner. As soon as it was obvious she was going to share the table with him he stood up, towering over the girl, and gave her a small smile. She seemed somewhat familiar to him but he couldn't quite place it.

"Hi," he said, gesturing to the chair opposite him. "I think I've seen you around here before. Actually, I see you here quite a bit now that I think about it."

"Hey yourself," She grinned, taking a seat opposite him and leaning back in her chair. She should have made time to come in and check in on him; he'd grown up more since the last time she had checked.

"Well, I wouldn't make a good owner if people didn't see me much, would I?" Her grin softened. "And I have seen you around here a lot. Black coffee, nothing fancy, right?"

Harry’s eyes narrowed a bit as he tried to place the girl, and it seemed like he just about knew but couldn’t place it. It was going to drive him crazy. He supposed he could have had Lash help, but he was uncomfortable with relying on her for much.

“I’m not really a fancy type guy,” Harry admitted, although it wasn’t like that wasn’t obvious at first glance. “If there was something more plain than black coffee, I would have ordered that.”

She grinned, leaning forward and putting an elbow on the table so she could support her head in her hand. If he asked, she would tell him, but she did enjoy it when people took their time in guessing as well.

"I'll have to make sure to include some plainer stuff, then, so you have more of a choice," She said happily. "So how are you doing, Harry?"

Harry felt like she was teasing him, almost like she was taunting him with who she was, and he resolved to figure out where he knew her from.

"Really, just the coffee is all I'd really get," Harry said, before adding. "Alright, maybe I should look into getting a pastry now and then. And I'm doing fine. Busy. Adjusting, but this place is at least safer for me than home."

She was, just a little, but she could either tell him and be done with it, and how was that fun?

"We have a few really good cooks in our kitchen now, I think Rapunzel would love for you to have a pastry," She grinned. "I'm glad to hear that. Not a lot of people come in and have an easy time of it."

Harry was going to play her game for a little bit longer at least, mostly because he loved solving a mystery and partially because she was kind of adorable.

"Well, I'd hate to disappoint Rapunzel," Harry said, not wanting to think if it was the Rapunzel of legend or not. "And the fact that not nearly as many people or things here are trying to kill me as back home makes the transition a lot easier."

It was and it wasn't; but then Death had met so many Rapunzels before, the name never mattered as much as the person did. She grinned.

"Yeah, she'll turn the waterworks on you pretty quickly if need be," She laughed at that, tapping a hand against her leg. "Oh yeah. I've had to keep my eye on you for awhile there. It's easier now when you only have to worry about what happens at night rather then day and night."

"I don't fair well against waterworks," Harry said, wincing at the thought of it. He didn't fair well against just the threat of waterworks, let alone the actual thing.

And he didn't miss the comment about her keeping an eye on him, but for some reason it didn't seem odd coming from her, like he knew she had to.

"I'm not so sure it's only the things that come out in the night that we have to worry about."

"Not too many people do," She laughed, leaning back in her seat. "Oh? What else do we need to watch out for, Harry?"

"People," Harry said. He'd found that "rational" beings could be just as monstrous as traditional monsters.

"True. There are so many ways for people to behave...it's a little sad that some of them decide to be cruel. I never really got that part," She shrugged a little.

"Well, my excuse is that I wasn't hugged enough as a child and society made me do it," Harry said with a shrug, sipping his coffee. It was mostly a joke, maybe he could have used a few more hugs as a kid.

They all could use hugs after awhile. Death was glad that she gave plenty of them, even when they were not wanted.

"Well, you know that if you ever want free hugs, there are plenty of people who'll give them to you. Well. Maybe some of them aren't going to be free," She smirked slightly, standing up from the table. "Excuse me, I'll be right back."

She had to get her own cup of coffee for this. And maybe this would give him some time to figure things out.

"I think I'm alright with my current level of hugs," Harry said, chuckling a bit. It wasn't so much that Harry minded hugs, he just minded them from people he didn't know very, very well.

While she was gone, Harry tried to rack his brain to remember who she was. He wanted to say she had a D-name. Diana, Debbie... something like that.

"You're from my world, aren't you?" Harry asked once she was back.
