Summary: The sleeper wakes.
The first thing Ken was aware of was the smell. Hospital sterile, a familiar smell that burned in a different way than fire, something he's hated ever since he was a kid. But he wasn't conscious enough to realize exactly what it was--only that he didn't like it.
The second was sounds. Beeping, rushing, footsteps, and nearer the deep even breathing of someone sleeping. Those were what finally roused him to awareness, eyes drifting open to stare at the institutional white ceiling while trying to remember what the bloody hell just happened.
...oh right. Next time he decided to jump in front of a car, he'd have to remember that it bloody well hurt.
