The rules of the new game

Mar 05, 2010 13:39

Who: Yagami Light & Near, probably Mello later.
When: Friday March 5th
Where: a skeevy empty warehouse somewhere in Sector 9 since they had to move thanks to Edgeworth & BB THE HARDY BOYS
Summary: Five days after taking him captive, the Wammy boys have to let their prisoner go--but not without some terms of agreement. I mean you really can't keep a guy locked in a basement for more than a week, this stuff is extremely time sensitive.
Warnings: nnnn language maybe will update blah blah

Finger puppets had been particularly difficult to locate in the city. None of the toy stores seemed to carry them, never mind blank and faceless ones that Near could alter to suit him. Now that he had some, it would be best to proceed with caution. The puppets were in limited supply, and if he ruined one, he might not be able to find another to replace it. Near put one of the puppets on his index finger and considered it carefully before beginning to paint.

"We are letting you go today," he said without looking up at Light. He didn't need to look at him. He had watched Mello tie Light to this new chair, in this new warehouse, twisting his arms viciously behind his back. They'd been forced to sedate Light again in order to bring him here, and even then it had taken some time and effort to move through the city without being seen.

And now they had to let him go again.

It was maddening, to be so close to figuring everything out, and then being forced to abandon this portion of the investigation altogether. If they were at home, there would be nothing in their way. L was a practically unstoppable force. But here in Siren's Port, there were factors beyond their control. They would have to let Light go. It was a little disappointing.

If Light was Kira--and Near was almost certain that he was--then they had lost this round to him. He had not admitted to much more than a few details: his real name, the fact that he had known L quite well, the fact that he knew what Shinigami were... They were important details, to be sure, but details nonetheless--small pieces in the overall puzzle.

And there was still the possibility that Light was not Kira. There had to be a margin for error, even if it was only the slightest of chances that they had miscalculated in some way. But the "relationship" details completely shifted around all of Near's probabilities. If L had showed a momentary lapse in judgment, and had somehow become entangled in a personal relationship with Light, then that was one thing. Still another thing, however, was for L to somehow become entangled in a personal relationship with Kira. He would never be so stupid. But then, the only conclusion Near could draw from that would be that Light was indeed telling the truth. He had gone over and over it in his head, but there was nothing else for it. If Light was telling the truth about his relationship with L, then he could not be Kira.

And furthermore, there was no way of determining the truth of his statements at all. They were in a genuine stalemate, and he hated that.

Near carefully dabbed black paint on the body of the wooden puppet, intently focused on his work. He had some time with Light still. This was an opportunity.

"We ought to discuss what you will do once we have let you go." He held the finger puppet up and squinted at his handiwork. Artistry was not one of Near's strong points. The paint was smudged in a few places. He would have to give it a second coat. "Tell me exactly what you will tell Edgeworth and Big Boss about your time here."

There were other things to discuss, certainly, but the details of this had to be verified first.

(btw sidenote OH J-JEEZ YOU GUYS this will be the last of our logspam for awhile I swear 83)
