Sasuke wasn't a shinobi anymore.

His months spent in Edelweiss had defined that for him, solidified it, beat him down with it. Things like missions and battles and structure didn't matter to him anymore. His identity as a ninja had been ripped out of him and hung somewhere on meat hooks, and what was left was a carcass laden down with abilities that had no purpose anymore.

That was fine. He didn't need a purpose. His mind wasn't focused anymore--it was fractured, and the edges scraped together horribly as he struggled to find direction. The only thing he knew was the anger he could feel frothing inside him incessantly, anger he didn't know how to handle. He couldn't handle it, so he channeled it. Spit it out upon every monster he encountered night after night, becoming something increasingly less human as time passed ( ... )

After a long time of waiting, considering what she should do, and changing her mind ten times, Sakura held her breathe and finally knocked ( ... )

He stood, pushing aside the uneaten food and pouring himself a glass of water. He drained it quickly, waiting for her to get the hint and just walk in, and he sighed in irritation.

"Door's open," he muttered, setting down the empty glass. His stomach felt constricted, making it difficult to breathe, and he fingers curled against the surface of the counter.

Hearing his voice, even if muffled by the door, made her more anxious. She grabbed the doorknob and let herself in quietly, trying not to push herself into his space. She stepped in and shut the door behind her, then leaned against it.

It took her several minutes to debate on what to say, on how to act. In the end she forced a smile and just mutter lamely, "I brought some food, if you're hungry." and held the bag in her left hand up for him to see.

"I'm not," Sasuke replied truthfully, and remembered with a slight squirm of his stomach when he'd batted apples out of her hand. It was difficult, now, to recognize the person he'd been back then. St. Edelweiss had sliced down the middle of his life and pushed the two sides far from one another, and they rarely touched.

She was smiling, and he wished she wouldn't. There really was no reason to smile. He never understood why people did that--plastered some expression on their face when it didn't match what was underneath.

"Just leave it on the counter," he added after a moment, just so she wouldn't linger near the door like that.

Her hand lowers with his words, as does her smile. Exactly. Two words and she already felt useless. She needed to get control and not let it bother her... not let him see how he affected her.

As she cautiously walks over to the counter she can't help but be nosy and view the room and the way he lived. The room seemed so-- bare. That worries her and her eyebrows pull together for a few second before she puts the small, yet fake, smile back on her face and turns.

"Right, I'll leave it for later then." She leans on the counter now, perhaps a habit of learning not to turn her back on others. Not to trust too easily. "How have you been doing, since you got here?" Small talk? Really? She could mentally smack herself but she doesn't know how to act around him, how to be. So she acts and pretends.
