[When the feed clicks on, it's difficult to see much of anything, as Desmond's hand is obscuring most of the camera. More than that, the entire picture is shaking, because his hands are shaking. Needless to say, hitting the video function wasn't intentional.]

Jesus Christ, this fucking thing. It never does--

I'm not sure how long a person can stand not to sleep, but...I think a better question would be why you would be trying to force yourself to stay awake in the first place. It's not exactly healthy...

[ That keyed up manner of speech was almost funny if she weren't a bit concerned by how frazzled he seemed. ]

Depending on the person? I'd say that letting yourself sleep is the unhealthy thing.

How do you figure that...?

Hypothetically speaking, sleep aggravates certain... medical conditions.

That's...some kind of medical condition if sleep aggravates it. [ She doubts nightmares are a medical condition. ]

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

And coffee doesn't help? I don't think smoking will help much either - for one, it's only going to exacerbate the medical condition. For another, if you fall asleep while smoking, you'll end up setting something on fire.

What about exercise?

Exercise? Eh, you know, I don't know, that really... [it involves leaving his apartment, but he doesn't exactly want to say that. The struggle is likely to be clear on his face.] I'm sure smoking can't be all that bad.

[ He doesn't have to leave the apartment - unless it's so tiny and cramped he can't do a few sit ups or push ups. Her expression goes a bit concerned at the obvious struggle. ]

What's wrong with exercising? It's healthier than smoking, if what I read in those books is true.

There's nothing wrong with it, I'm just really not really in the best... physical... I just can't right now.

[ Hurt maybe? Ella's thoughtful. ] Well - the best way to stay awake I think, is to keep your mind active. How long do you plan on trying to stay awake?

Honestly? As long as I can.

You could poke yourself with pins when you feel like you're falling asleep.

[ She's ... nowhere near serious with this suggestion. ] Or play -- well, no, playing music might put you to sleep faster. Unless it's really bad music, like the shrieking of harpies.

[He laughs at that.] You sound like you have some experience with harpies.

[ She grins at the laugh. ] Not personally, but my friend Arieda told me they inhabited the mountains of Ayortha a time ago.

It's... not a bedtime story. [ Unless you count the one about the ogres, but that was true too. ]
