[her NV switches on, and for a few moments at first Shiki doesn't speak; it's just white noise hissing through the speaker. when she does talk, she sounds contemplative, rather quiet.]
You know... I've been thinking, and it's funny...
My best friend Eri and I, we've known each other for like forever, and ages ago we kind of promised each other... that we'd go into fashion together. Um, she's the designer, but I'm the seamstress. So, she comes up with the ideas, and I make them real. Sometimes I have to change what she comes up with, because she has great ideas, but they don't always work in the real world. You can draw, like, the craziest stuff, you know? But that's just on paper, and when you try to actually make it it turns out it's crazy or uncomfortable and it won't quite work no matter how good the idea is. But if you adapt the idea, then you can make it work, and you can make it amazing, and now it's something real. And if you hit it big, then it can be amazing for a lot more people than just your model, or just you and her...
So, we said we'd do it. Eri and me, we're a great team. I've been sewing what she's come up with for a long time, um, even if I have some of my own side projects...
But then you get to places like this, you know? And this place is really horrible in some ways. I don't think what I'm doing is really stupid... because if you do it right, working out something like that, someone in the perfect suit or dress, they can feel really good, and it can make them really happy. And that's what I like about it.
But people here need so much more than something like that to be okay. There are people, with the companies, I mean, who are in, like... serious trouble. And have problems that are way bigger than what they're wearing.
I still want to do it, I think? It makes me happy too. It's what I like doing, making things like that, and making things people will use. But...
