2 Children Dead from Hyperthermia
The number of deaths related to the heat wave increases as two girls, a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old, were found dead in their room this morning. Autopsy reports indicate that the main cause of their death is hyperthermia.
The siblings, Jane and Teresa Cook, went to bed around 9 PM yesterday evening and never woke up. Officials say that the electric fans installed in their rooms did little to decrease the temperature in their room and instead added to the risk of dehydration due to the heat. Young children and the elderly are especially at risk in these types of conditions. The windows were sealed as a security measure against the Darkness; however, findings suggest that this also contributed to the high level of heat in the room.
"I can't believe this happened," says their grief-stricken mother, 34-year-old Susan Griffin. "We - their stepfather and I - bought those appliances two weeks ago to lessen our expenses."
The Griffins moved to an apartment close to the border between Sectors 4 and 9 two months ago in order to find more affordable rent. However, they had to discontinue their use of air conditioning in order to keep up with their increasing electric bill and find other means of cooling off. The two girls were visiting their mother for the first time after they had made the change when the incident occurred.
Mark Cook, the parent in custody of the two children, was unable to respond to our calls.
The Skye Medical Center reports a 32% increase in the admission of patients suffering from hypothermia, heat stroke, and other heat-related disorders, with their numbers increasing as the heat wave continues. The medical community has advised people to avoid going out as much as possible, drink lots of fluids, and to keep cool as much as possible.
A proposal to lower the electricity costs for the 5,000 individuals living in Sectors 4, 9 and 10 is being reviewed by the local government in order to prevent an increase in these sorts of incidences.
