Canada Day Celebrations!

The article for today is a report on the City's efforts to put together a celebration for Canada Day, despite the damage that is still being repaired from the earthquake. There is a quick blurb explaining how the transit system is now back up to 97% working order, and how many buildings have been restored, with most homeless victims having found new residences or gotten help to fix their damaged homes.

The reporter moves on from these 'depressing topics' to discussing the planned celebrations for the commemoration of Canada's independence. It gives a quick blurb explaining the history of Canada in very light depth - it mentions that Canada gained status as its own country on July 1, 1867, and that were still ties to the British empire for some time after, though those were finally gotten rid of in 1982. It goes on to state that the day is a good time for Canadians to celebrate the birthday of their country, and it mentions that even though Siren's Port citizens aren't technically Canadian on the books, that Canada is very important to the City, as it's the source of a lot of budget and support for the City, giving supplies and other imports of things that aren't self-sustainable.

It goes on to state that a parade is slotted to occur in Sector 4, with several streets being closed off, in the early afternoon, with various floats, balloons, and a march by the Siren's Port Police Department, some of its ambulance attendants and other medical staff, as well as the Siren's Port Fire Department. It notes that there will be food stalls and other entertainment in the street, and that the area will be blocked off all through the afternoon, so that people may wander through the area, eat, and participate in various games, stalls, and other fairground type entertainment. There will be a few carnival style rides set up, including a merry-go-round, pirate ship, and Gravitron, as well as a small petting zoo with farm animals that survived unradiated after the earthquake and pony rides.

The article finishes off with a statement that there will be a fireworks display. It comments that security will be as tight as possible to avoid monster attacks in this after-Darkness display, and that there are many, many positions open for anyone who wants to contribute to security at this event.

[OOC Note: Hiya guys! We've decided to do an open log for the upcoming Canada Day celebrations. This will be going up tomorrow (June 30) night around midnight and will be open for people who wish to attend the parade, street festival, and fireworks. We'll be giving you a little information here on how the log and subthreads will work, and how your character can participate.

The log will function as follows - similar to previous open logs, there will be one catch-all starting log, with various subthreads for different events. In this case, there will be a subthread for the parade, the street festival, and the fireworks at night. The fireworks will have their own subthreads - you may play your character either in the safer and more secure West end of the fireworks area, where the security will be most tight and secure, and there will be no monster attacks...or you can play your character in the less secure East area where monsters may break in and attack, and your character may fight or be protected by security. We will have a few scheduled sub-thread attacks, specifically at 9:30 pm and midnight, where there are sure to be attacks, but if you'd like to play through other minor scuffles in the East area, feel free to play them out in other threads.

Player characters may apply as security for this event. If you want your character to perform as security for the fireworks in the evening, they will be required to attend and patrol for monsters after the sirens have gone off. There will be a few monster repelling things set in place - sturdy sandbag walls will be constructed around the area, and sturdy netting will be in place to try to cut down on the creatures that can get in. This won't keep them all out, though! If you choose to put your character on security, they can help out when monster attacks break out and protect player characters or NPCs from monsters. Player characters may also run booths to sell things or host a game, or for any other purpose - feel free to post these booths as sub-threads under the street festival heading (with a subject line so people know what the booth is) so other player characters can enjoy your character's booth.

Any questions can be posted to this news entry, and a mod will reply as soon as possible.

Enjoy the festival on Thursday, guys!]
