You know what people are supposed to say when they wake up in some ass-backwards location with no fucking clue where they are? I’m sure it has something to do with asking if this is a kidnapping, but it doesn’t seem like I’m the only one here, does it? At least according to, [ he stops for a moment, as if he's listening to something ] the ( Read more... )

I presume you're speaking about The Core?

[There's a terribly young looking lab assistant (because he is) in labcoat without the scrubs tonight, and less identifiable as a doctor, in some non-descript, sterile hallway.]

That's something many of us- all of us, I'd venture to say, would like answered.

Unfortunately they're not putting forth much effort towards unearthing it, and research. It's too violate, too unpredictable. The companies would squabble over it, if permitted to.

[ Off-mic, there's a slight 'uh', before he actually speaks, a laugh, even. ]

At least some things aren't so different than what I know. So nobody knows what it is, where it comes from, or anything really about it? That sounds like a recipe for disaster.

It's been a recipe for disaster.

Whoever tampered with it last, some...90 years ago? Triggered a disaster which killed off most life on the island in its first colonization, back when Siren's Port was called Missionsworth. They say that's when the Darkness Decay Effect was created, too. So it's little wonder they play it cautious. The administration isn't in any kind of position to regulate or negotiate tampering or experimentation- it's questionable whether its even safe for anyone to be down there within range of the energy fields.

Something of that kind of power has significant implications. Maybe it's better to keep it an unknown, at least till there is a way of holding people accountable for their potential mistakes.

I'm Dr. Yumeno, by the way. You must be one of our newer arrivals.

Yeah, I suppose I am. Mitchell Hundred.

I can't say I've ever seen anything like this before. So this Core is why I'm here, essentially, right? [ He pauses, the implications of that is enough to make him stop and think about it ]

I can't say I blame them if it wiped things out once already.

Mr. Hundred. [Easy to remember. He nods.] Yes. It reaches out across time and space, 'parallel worlds' (as some of the popular theories go), to tether new inhabitants to the island.

It's a phenomenon most of us took to with a good deal of initial shock, that's expected.

The Core is a good deal of concern for all denizens, but those of us it pulls are regarded with the usual suspicion. Most of the native-born don't receive us particularly well, you'll find. We're a small population, surprisingly! So this newcomer network established, along with the housing services provided by AGI and SERO, and the Community Center we've set up ourselves, are good tools for getting on your feet.

[ Yeah that veneer of calm is going to just go now, and his NV shuts off with the only sound of a "FU-". It takes a few minutes before he switches that back on, and when he speaks, he does not sound calm. ]

There are community centers. For the, [ shaky breath ] immigrants.

Yes.

[Dr. Yumeno swallows, responding in just a brief moment as if he hadn't dropped the line. He's been waiting, patient. Usually it's the greeters who take on this job, and not NPP members on a slow night.

There's a very brittle and clinging note of understanding there, as if the doctor is holding something long-suppressed back, bottom lip tucked between his teeth and a bit of a wince in his eyes.

The immigrants. The once-dirty word of a comfortable citizen. It's sinking in. I wonder if my own reaction had been as telling, in the slow dawning of difficulty.]

For us.

Sorry, I-- [ Yeah, he can tell, and he stops for a moment, but doesn't actively shut it off this time. He's been telling himself this is just an elaborate prank, because it was too close to home for him, too close to something he's been avoiding. ]

I see.

So it's just like a proverbial Chinatown in the middle of this. Good to know. Who's in charge? Is there a, [ heh ] Mayor or anything?

gaveherwings January 4 2012, 11:31:24 UTC
Sorry, [And here there's an utterly blank look.] a proverbial....Chinatown?

In charge? Most would argue that the executive board of Afterglow and SERO throw the most weight around, but there is a Governor of the island, Governor Townshed. He's been in office since last June. A number cruncher. True, he's been sorting out the sorry budgeting mess by tossing even more off to the private sector, but, most are of the opinion that he's still better than our last. Redgrave, who had his head completely in the sand.

Through we can't exactly march up to City Hall and demand answers- ah, it doesn't quite matter who you were, princes, heroes, barons, director-chiefs all. [a weak laugh, and apologetic shrug] They'd laugh newcomers out of the building and send us back to the Greeters.

Governor Townshed, huh? [ that voice is way too interested. ] What more can you tell me about him?

[ Yeah that's like telling the bear to stay away from the honey ]

He's unpleasant and mincing, from what I hear. Cut his whole staff's holiday bonus budget, so they're awfully miffed at him up there at the moment? [There's a wry, dry note of amusement. The press never reports on anything of real consequence.]

He was a financial adviser before the election, probably more like a glorified desk clerk. The 11th hour neutral party. A desperate balancing act, if you ask me, but probably for the best.

The Governor is a finance guy. [ So flat. ]

What was wrong with the other candidates?

Mhm. [Well isn't this one keen? He'll have to point him out to Franz, who will kindly point him over to Raul Creed. Or he could skip the middleman and just give the Chief a ring himself, but Raul is probably still a little sour with him.]

SERO openly supported Stone, and once they found out AGI was backing Keelson, her other affiliations went out the window. I guess people aren't so loyal to their parent company as they are to the idea of keeping stabilized peace, in the end.

Where are you from? Anything like this?

homomachinis January 4 2012, 12:17:46 UTC
Nothing like this! I'm was in Washington, DC. There's no mysterious people showing up.

[ MOVING ON FROM THAT. Mitchell is very private ]

So the big players are SERO and AGI, and nobody wanted them in power, I take it?

The year was 2012 for you as well?

No one wanted to risk what might happen if one were in more power than the other. If one company rose to power, they might decide to let themselves handle the Core, and then-

[He mimes an explosion, shaking his head]

There's so little public accountability as it is.

Shit, what!? No! It's-- It was 2009!

Fuck, okay, an exploding core is bad, got it. [ His mind has swung wildly away from it now. ] Twenty twelve!?
