The Legend of the Lighthouse Captain: Fact or Fiction?
The two-part historical piece continues with a breakdown of the common ghost stories surrounding Missionsworth Lighthouse and its ghostly pirate captain, as well as his treasure which is said to be kept at the top of the lighthouse and only appears during the dark hours. Even darkness monsters fear the terrible hoarding greed of captain, and keep free of the isle. Every night, the ghost is said to light the lamps and polish his treasure until dawn.
Over the years, many have tried to reach the lighthouse on dares or expeditions, like the one conducted last week. Among the few who have survived these trips, many fall to madness shortly afterward, foreboding images of the lighthouse haunting their dreams with towering and spiraling imagery which becomes an obsession to the waking eye. Two survivors from the mid-seventies now live at St. Teresa’s Sanitarium, where psychiatrists say they draw thousands of lighthouse-shaped sketches a day, saying very little but a haunted, hollow “Beware. Turn Back”. They sometimes babble about an impossible climb up stairs, their footsteps agonizingly heavy in the ascent.
However, historical records show that the lighthouse did in fact house a reclusive sea captain in the mid-twenties. Records describe him as a sturdy, stocky man with a thick beard. His name was Captain Orson Whaler, born an American fisherman from Maine, who later joined the navy and was assigned to patrol the Northwest region, where he washed up on Crow’s Head Beach during a particularly nasty storm which took the life of his crew and sunk his ship.
He wound up taking on the job as lighthouse-keeper, after the core mutated his body and he became affected by The Pull. Whaler developed an interesting skill- his body would repel water, leaving his skin dry and itchy. He could dive underwater, swim and walk, and the water would repel inches away from him, leaving him ‘bubble’ room to breath. It was said that he would venture out into the oceas and bring back some of the finest treasures from sunken ships, as well as lovely shells and other things from the depths of the ocean. He would use his rare finds to trade for goods, although he only ventured onto the main island about once a month to gather provisions.
A loner, the man seemed married to his job, running the fog horns and the lights, keeping things well oiled and working. Spotless. During storms he would stand on the outer balcony of the light house tower, while the light spun and flashed, and waved his fists at the oncoming storm and, asking if that was all it had! Naturally, mainland denizens believed the man was was a little crazy, spreading rumors about his origins and his secluded nature.
One night however, the lights didn’t come on. The fog rolled in. and no horn went off. It had been over a month and Whaler hadn’t been seen on shore, made no contact. The month before he had been talking to himself as he bought previsions, but most people figured “spend that much time alone and your bound to talk to yourself.” A week went by with no light and no horns. the lighthouse seemed dead. They sent three men out to check on the Captain, but none of them returned, their boat showed up dashed on the rocks the next morning. People thought perhaps it was a accident, so they sent another crew out.
This crew made it to the lighthouse and found the other three men, brutally murdered, two on the island outside and one just inside the lighthouse door. The slaughter was clearly not the form of an animal or darkness monster, so it was classified as murder. The body of the captain was never found. One of the men from this expedition ended up falling form the spiral staircase and broke his neck, a true accident. They rushed away from the island, taking what they could and reporting back.
What did happen to the lighthouse keeper? Is there any truth to the popular pirate tale, or was the Captain Whaler a guilty and insane man, mourning the loss of his ship and crew? Given the recent disastrous expedition, Siren’s Port seems doomed to continue wondering.
-Last night, Club 24 had a crazy flash mob dance experience that's gone totally viral.
DJ Risa Cooper, also known as Kolde was playing sometime after seven last night, when suddenly the entire floor began dancing along to her mix of several popular songs. Three people were injured, and possibly one of the oddest videos to come out of the port is created. It seems Cooper's boyfriend, who happens to have the ability to control minds, helped to edit the tracks together and accidentally put the intent behind the song to have 'everyone dance'. Things went quickly downhill from there.
[Attached is a cellphone video of the entire dance floor doing a completely synchronized routine, complete with partnering up and some sort of odd, aerial routine using support beams. It really shouldn't be possible. Several unaffected people seem to be trying to grab friends out of the mix, one man in fact yanks his friend out of the way and causes one of the flyers to crash into the ground. The song glitches as everyone tries to check on the fallen man, who seems to be trying to get back up to rejoin the routine until the glitch, when he drops like his strings were cut. Several people appear stuck on support beams, and are calling to people on the floor to get them down, and the video cuts as the cameraman seems to be going to help out.]
Another local DJ, Joe Fieldman, was the one who captured the video. This wasn't the first time Fieldman has been involved in a viral craze, having this video already popular around the net. [Oh, you know what
this link is. Should you choose to click the link, The Final Countdown begins to play as a teenager executes a very shakily held camcorder through a series of violent encounters with minor darkness monsters.]
