I was very lucky -- I've been preceded here by several people from my world, one of whom is a friend and another of whom is some combination of a cherished student and an adopted daughter. They've settled in successfully, which gave me a place to live and references which helped get me a job at Jubilation's workplace. The fact that the manager is a Newcomer who worked his way up no doubt helped, but less than you'd think -- he didn't get his job because he lets his sentiments interfere in the hiring process.
That said, inquires about work opportunities on the network normally draw an enthusiastic response. And....
[She sighs.] It's complicated. But basically, the prejudice against Newcomers is worse at the bottom of the pyramid than at the top, so the people who hate us worst are least likely to be able to deny us jobs. The people hiring for high end jobs have their own prejudices against Newcomers, but ( ... )

[The telepathy comment does raise flags in Simon's mind and it would be impossible for anyone not to immediately think something along the lines of 'I hope she isn't reading my mind right now.' Unfortunately for the doctor he has more than a passing familiarity, and he has trouble deciding how much he should say...]
