Simon is still feeling some lingering effects of being yanked into Siren's Port and hasn't had much time to settle after being rushed from the Darkness outside to the safety of the nearest building. General advice? Don't run the water until dawn. It'll come out sludge. Don't worry if it comes out sludge for a few minutes after dawn: it should clear up. You look to be in the tower apartments - your neighbors should have containers of good water.

It's one of those lines of work where there's always a demand. What about you? What do you do to get by?

I work as an accountant for Lion's Gate Club, which is a very high-end restaurant which also does catering and events. I'm also helping start a jewelry business for - ah, a jeweler or jewelers who firmly wish to remain anonymous and are willing to pay a share of the business in order to accomplish this.

Sounds impressive. [He means it sincerely.] Was it difficult as a newcomer...?

Finding a job? No. The difficulty I've had as a Newcomer has been perfect strangers wishing me ill, not difficulty finding work.

I was very lucky -- I've been preceded here by several people from my world, one of whom is a friend and another of whom is some combination of a cherished student and an adopted daughter. They've settled in successfully, which gave me a place to live and references which helped get me a job at Jubilation's workplace. The fact that the manager is a Newcomer who worked his way up no doubt helped, but less than you'd think -- he didn't get his job because he lets his sentiments interfere in the hiring process.

That said, inquires about work opportunities on the network normally draw an enthusiastic response. And....

[She sighs.] It's complicated. But basically, the prejudice against Newcomers is worse at the bottom of the pyramid than at the top, so the people who hate us worst are least likely to be able to deny us jobs. The people hiring for high end jobs have their own prejudices against Newcomers, but

[The telepathy comment does raise flags in Simon's mind and it would be impossible for anyone not to immediately think something along the lines of 'I hope she isn't reading my mind right now.' Unfortunately for the doctor he has more than a passing familiarity, and he has trouble deciding how much he should say...]

[Never mind that she has enough range to reach everywhere on the island and could probably reach him if she really wanted to go to the effort of looking through all the minds in the Tower Apartments. No one needs to know that who doesn't already.]
